To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:
Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.
If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.
To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.
The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.
For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Any idea on if this is a good unit or not I have a guy wanting to trade my pro-74 scanner for this "TK-940" would this be a good deal I dont have any way to program it
The Kenwood TK-940 is an 800MHz commercial radio which will do conventional and LTR. If you only want to listen to 800 LTR systems and conventional 800 channels then the 940 will do fine. The 940s generally go for less than 100 on eBay. What your scanner is worth I don't know but if it is more, don't trade. If it is, trade and resell it.....if it's in good condition.
I have two of these radios so if you want to know more ask...
hey wayne, i have the same radio i got from my job, we used to have them in every truck, but now we all have nextel phones, do u know how to program that radio? and is there any way to make it more than a 800mhz radio just for listening purposes, also do u know of any 800mhz freq's that are legal to talk on without a lic.?

It's programmed like most any other commercial radio, i.e., it requires a programming cable and associated software. The software is pretty straight forward but setting up LTR systems can be a bit tough at first. And you can set up conventional 800 channels for receive only, no trunking though (you would need to remove the mic). There are no 800MHz freqs available that do not require a frequency. 853.4875 is a common itinerant that some comm shops program in for kicks. Once an area officially rebands that freq will be given to Public Safety though.

You can purchase a cable from a Kenwood dealer or via ebay. It plugs in to the mic jack of the radio. And I am not familiar with those radios systems you describe so I can't answer that question of what can or can't.
Sorry for jumping on this question Wayne, but as an Albertan, i do have an answer for this one.
Cable can be had on ebay, software your going to have to get from kenwood or an authorized kenwood reseller.
The radio you have is for 800Mhz, Ladd 1 and Ladd 2 are Vhf, this radio CANNOT be programmed for these two channels. to be able to have a radio on Ladd1&2. You are going to need a Vhf(136-174Mhz) Radio.
mavrickr, if you have any other questions please feel free to PM me, as i live in Alberta, and i will answer any questions as best as i can.
