I am currently looking for a dual bander for my truck. I already have a 536hp. I wanted to use a GPS unit with my scanner. I noticed that the Kenwood 710 has a GPS output with a 9pin serial connection. So my question obviously is will the Kenwood feed the correct GPS data into the 536? The 536 needs a NMEA compliant GPS feed. The Kenwood website does not state if the Kenwood outputs to the NMEA standard. Thoughts?

Thank you.

Slow down a minute! NMEA 0138 format/structure/protocol whatever you want to call it does not guarantee what information is in the data stream. Looking at Wikipedia it is the sentence (message) structure that is sent (710) which has to be what the listener (scanner) understands.

Data from a GPS will be Lat/Long.

Data from a 710 will be decoded APRS packets from another location, with lat/long and other data from the sending location.

In the new 'G' model there may be a sentence structure you can send that the scanner will understand. I know in my non-'G' 710 I could send data to a mapping GPS or laptop that would plot the decoded APRS packet. I don't recall being able to only send my current location. The new 710 may be different.
Mike

Awesome thank you .That will save me some money

Slow down a minute!

No need to slow down, Bill.

Data from a 710 will be decoded APRS packets from another location, with lat/long and other data from the sending location.

As per the documentation I posted above (the PDF manual), the 710G (the new model) outputs NMEA position sentences. From the manual (my emphasis):

This function enables exporting the NMEA 0183 raw data from the internal GPS unit via the Com connector.

mcscanner, as a fellow 710A owner, I appreciate the concern that I was leading Bill astray, as I know that model didn't have such an output. At one time, when I had my radio still permanently mounted in my vehicle, I was contemplating hacking together a cable to go from the GreenLightLabs GPS710 device to the Uniden GPS input cable, but never found the right pinout (or time to do it). Bill will save a lot of time and hassle by outputting GPS from his ham rig directly into the scanner.

Jay911,

Your information was correct and not taking anyone astray. I just wanted to point out that there was a possibility based on what I knew and extent of information presented might have a gap. I did not go into the link to get more information where I might have picked up on the sentence options available. My Bad. :D

Bill,

Did you get the TM-D710GA? Have you tried it with your 536HP? You peaked my interest, so I've ordered the PG-5G cable, and I'm going to give it a go.

Kenwood 710 GPS

My memory tells me that the 710 does not have a builtin GPS, the port is to INPUT GPS data to radio. The radio has a builtin TNC.

The GPS module (external) was an option fo rthe unit.....

or I could be wrong :<)

OK, since the OP hasn't come back to this thread, I thought I would post my experience. I ordered and received an aftermarket PG-5G programming cable for my Kenwood TM-D710GA dual bander. This aftermarket cable has the 5-pin mini din connector for the radio side, to a 9-pin D female serial connector. I set up my Kenwood to output GPS data (the 710G has the built-in GPS) to the COM connector (on the back of the control head). This is done on menu 500, GPS SETUP 1, COM OUTPUT : ON. Then on menu 929, AUX, COM PORT BAUDRATE, I set to 9600, the lowest rate.

I then set up the Uniden BCD536HP serial port to 9600 baud, under the "Set Your Location" menu, "Set Up GPS", "Set Serial Port".

I connected the cable to the respective ports (mini-din to the Kenwood control head, and 9-pin serial to the back connector on the Uniden).

Voila!!! The GPS indicator immediately showed up on the 536HP display, and the scanner position was set from the Kenwood! It will work! No need for an extra GPS cluttering up the dash, just the PG-5G cable (see here: Programming Cable Kenwood TM D710 TM V71 PG 5g PG5G | eBay).

Let me know if you have any questions.

You sure that's a 5 pin mini-DIN?
