To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

I am running the KPG-44d version 1.02 and I am having trouble with the COMM ports. There is an update I read that fixes this issue due to me running a 64bit computer. Does anyone else have this problem and/or has anyone done the update to the 2.1 version?

It has beenn awhile since I have used the 44 program, however I think it still only gives you like 4 com ports to choose from with the newer version. What kind of cable are you using 9 pin or USB? Have you gone into the device manager, com ports, and see what your cable is using? You may have to reassign the com port to there to make it work.

KPG-44DN v2.1 was released in November of 2012. I'm not on my PC right now, so I can't look at it to see what changes were made.

V2.1 still only allows for 4 com ports. connect your cable, go to device mgr/com ports and see what port it shows.

Then change it to 1 to 4 and you should be okey.

If you computer has a 9 pin serial port, you will only be able to use 2, 3,4 for usb as the serial is by default com 1.

Latest version

Is the KPG-44DN, Version 2.1. When you open the setup tab, you should be able to select COM1 up to COM20. However only com ports that the software sees will be able to be selected. What version of Windows are you running, is it 32 bit or 64 bit, and what type of USB-to-Serial adapter are you using?

One more thing

The KPG-44DN converts ALL of the channels you have enabled for transmitting on to narrow band. I have a VHF/UHF single head system in my vehicle. If you use any Ham channels or GMRS channels, make sure that they are narrowband capable. If not, you might want to use the older KPG-44D, and manually select narrowband for those services that are required to be narrowband. Amateur and GMRS were not required to go narrowband.

Re: KPG-44D

It sounds more like a hardware issue. I've tested Win7 64, and noticed the same with one of my machines. I would try this first: With the USB-serial adapter plugged in, go to device manager, select the adapter and uninstall it. Unplug it from your computer, and restart it. Once the bios screen appears and before windows starts to boot, repeatedly press F8. That should give you a list of startup options. Select the option to disable forced signature of drivers.Once Windows has finished booting, plug in the adapter, and allow Windows to search for and install the drivers. Once it shows up in Device manager, double click on the adapter, select the Port tab, then Advanced. It will probably show COMM4. From the drop-down box, change it to COMM1. Click OK, and exit. With the adapter still plugged in, launch KPG-44D, and select the setup tab. You should then see COMM1, with all other ports greyed out. Click on Comm1, and OK.

If that doesn't work, give me the processor type and speed, and amount of RAM.There are several things that could be tried if that doesn't work. I've also seen some of the aftermarket programming cables not play nice with the TK-X90 series, but since you aren't able to select a comm port from the setup tab, I wouldn't worry about that yet.
