Los Angeles County ISD department is proceeding with plans to update the near 3 decade old trunked Countywide Integrated Radio System (CWIRS).
The update of the current EDACS system being driven by a host of issues including ongoing support difficulties due age and end of life for the existing hardware plus eventual need to rebrand to meet FCC mandate.
The bulk of the projects hardware will be funded by Sprint-Nextel as part of its rebranding agreement with the FCC.
Projected time line is:
Nov 2011 - RFI process to evaluate the radio industry vendor community’s suggestions to reband CWIRS in an optimum manner.
Jan 2012 - Obtain Board of Supervisors approval to proceed with the CWIRS P-25 upgrade and rebanding project.
Apr 2012 - Select a vendor to perform CWIRS upgrade
May 2012 - Negotiating the agreement(s) with Sprint Nextel and selected Vendor
Sep 2012 - Site Preparation for “parallel” operation
Jun 2013 - Reprogram/retune/replace subscriber equipment
Aug 2013 - Project complete.
