Can anyone give me the basic info for Los Angeles City Fire Department's radio system? Basically all i know so far is that it is 800Mhz conventional. Are there any plans of system changes in the near future? Also what would be a good radio to use for monitoring ONLY, either Kenwood or Motorola.

There is no talk or an updates on LA City Fire Dept moving or upgrading their 800 mhz conventional system.

Since LA-RICS system has been put to rest for a while there is no plans for nothing including LAPD too.

The 800 mhz conventional system is a very stable Analog system so I say at least 5 more years on this system and that would be it. That is just speculation. Maybe even longer. There is actually no point on moving or upgrading to any new digital system. Analog seems to be way more stable in a dense city like LA City.

As for a radio a good Motorola XTS 5000 radio would be nice but its going to cost you. Stick with a nice scanner to where you can have 1 radio and you will be able to listen to everything without having to be limited to 1 band only with a commerical grade radio. Just my 2 cents

If you want a radio for monitoring, use a Motorola MTS2000, XTS3000 or if your have money a XTS2500 or 5000. I also recommend you have a scanner handy if you want to monitor a UHF or VHF fire channel.

When the Northridge earthquake hit in 1994, the LAFD system was slammed. If I remember correctly, they reserved most of the repeaters for command traffic, and even used the I Comm/Tac stuff for some tactical comms.

Well, LA RICS isnt dead yet. They just posted some nice maps.

But I think LAFD will remain on 800 for the forseeable future.

As well as the contractors at LAPD's Valley Dispatch Center and multi-user repeater sites such as Oat Mountain and Baldwin Hills.
