Is the LAN cable used by a WS1098 a standard LAN cable or is it some special cable made specifically for this scanner?

It's a standard straight-thru ethernet cable. I believe Don Starr posted he had tested it up to 100' with no issues.

Yes and yes.

The head can be located at least 100 feet from the main unit (based on my testing, with 100 feet of Cat-5 cable).

Not a bad idea to eliminate antenna feedline loss.

... But you're gonna need 100' x2 of, say, #6 copper for the DC power feed
