Hey guy, I'm fairly new to scanning just got a Bc996P2 and I am able to program it using freescan. I have been trying to organize the data base offered here at radioreference, but I wanted to know how some of the professional organize there systems. And if you have any tips I would greatly appreciate it!

Using the back antenna but would like to get an antenna for my car any recommendations? I purchased all the circuitry to install the radio in my car (waiting on it to arrive). But still need to get a proper antenna. (Magmount referred)

Then you will be limited on what fou can hear and that will affect how you program. Obviously for what you can hear. When you get an outdoor antenna use LMR400 cable and nothing less and then program your favorites into one bank and then groups by division.

There are too many options to go into detail. You aren't looking for a single band antenna but a multi-band antenna. Most Multi Band antennas don't cover low band which is where CHP is located. My solution for that as I use professional antennas. I have something called a Triplexer that goes underneath the seat and three separate antennas feed it with one output to the radio. That way I get the optimum reception based on physics selecting the antenna. But let's not complicate this at this point. You need to go to eBay and search for scanner antennas and if you plan on listening to CHP who are down at 39 MHz compared to LAPD that is at 484 - 512 MHz that is a 5-inch antenna versus a 9-foot whip antenna. Do you plan on listening to L.A. County Fire? They are at 470MHz. The Forest Service? They are at 169 MHz. L.A. City Fire? They are at 800 MHz. See why i've told you that you need a multiband antenna? It gets volcanologists ...and will get interesting when LA-RISC takes over. https://www.la-rics.org/about-us/safety-and-factsheet/

I have to get off to work but I checked scanner master.com and they have an MA 500 that I have not tried but they state as being a wideband antenna. I have never used it and cannot speak to how well it works. I do have the Austin Spectra antenna and I can pretty much tell you they suck. I also have the $400 ferret antenna and they to suck. None-the-less follow this link and you will find the antenna. Perhaps there are other people here that use this antenna and can tell you how well it works. I can tell you that if you want to listen to CHP, which I find quite interesting and mandatory when driving the freeways, you need an antenna that has reasonable reception down on low band. The other bands will come in until we go to LA-RISC and then all countywide transmitter sites will be low power and it will operate like a cellular system seamlessly handing off from one cell to another. Here's the link to the antenna: https://www.scannermaster.com/MA500_Mobile_Whip_Antenna_p/19-541659.htm

Not worth the price.
Well there you go! Somebody that has first-hand experience with the antenna. Have you found an antenna that works from VHF low up into the 800? Antenna Specialists no longer makes such an antenna. The Austin Spectra is the antenna I have and I have not been thrilled with it for low band CHP. It all depends on what the OP wants and I think with no disrespect to him since he's new he doesn't know what he needs yet. Since there's nothing else that I am aware of available I would have to say that the Austin Spectra would be his best choice at this point.

So did I. But he's very slow on shipping because he has to order it from I believe it's Vermont or New Hampshire. It's a special-order item. It's even out of stock at Scanner Warehouse.

HRO has them in stock with free Standard Shipping. Have to wait to see what the OP thinks.

Yes but he has to buy the mag mount with cable for an additional $49.95. The mag mount at Scanner Master is $26.95 but the antenna is not in stock. Everyone in their pricing gimmicks. Why can't they just spit the price out once and for all? If it were me, and it has been me, I just drill a hole in the roof and put an NMO mount in.

Sorry for delayed response, I have been at work. So I have a Scion tc it's a small car. If I have a 7ft antenna hooked up to the back it's gonna look insane lol, is possible to get a shorter antenna 2-5ft? And still be able to listen to chp?

Also, I do have 2 scanners one Analog and one Digital. Maybe I can set the Analog scanner to chp and the digital to cover almost everything else? Are there lowband antennas that are not that long? What do you guys think?

This antenna that we e already told you about will do CHP ...and is only about 2 feet tall. You need ti fi your homework knife and make a decision.

I do geographic area. Each county/metropolitan area around me is in different list that turn on and off as I travel through them.

That's how I do it as well but also why I asked if the OP was going to be using the back of set antenna or an external antenna. With a back of set antenna if he's on the coastal side he's not likely to hear the valley side and vice versa. If he's up to close to the mountains that separate the two that's going to keep him from hearing one side or the other as well. That's why my streaming sites are located on both sides of the mountain.

But I agree with you. As I mentioned I have a bank that has my favorites on it and then I Bank them geographically.
