I dont have a TRX-1 but i believe all hand held scanners have an earphone jack.
That jack is not meant for an external speaker. Its meant to power tiny earphones.

The TRX-1 and the PSR-800 are the same in regards to audio from the headphone jack. The only thing I found to sound half way descent besides regular earphones is a small amp and an external speaker. All the small lapel speakers I have sound very low as well.
