I am still rocking two desktop PCs at home with Windows 7. I am considering a laptop computer that will be used mainly for programming scanners, amateur radios, and Motorola XTS5000 commercial radios. I am leaning towards one with a solid state drive. Does anybody here have any suggestions on computers that would serve that role well?

For the usage you describe, just about any current model laptop is going to work, since none of those applications put much strain on CPU or memory. But can you safely say that you will NEVER use the laptop for something like SDR (Software Defined Radio), DSD or other digital decoding software? Now we're talking the need for some processing horsepower. If the latter is true, visit the Software Defined Radio Forum for discussions on how much CPU you'll need.

Windows 7 works well for almost everything. I am using an Asus Wind7 x64 for SDR# software, Uniden scanners, Cisco equipment and Post CDM series Motorola radios.

For DOS based Motorola, I have a Win95 Toshiba Satellite, this is for GM300, Maxtrac's, Sabers, Icom IC-F2020's.
