LARIMER COUNTY - One person was killed in an automobile crash on U.S. Highway 287 north of Fort Collins Saturday morning.

The crash happened shortly after 10 a.m. near milepost 351 on U.S. 287, which is about a mile northwest of the intersection of U.S. 287 and Larimer County Road 54G.

A Chevrolet Avalanche southbound on U.S. 287 veered into the northbound lane, hitting a northbound Toyota Camry nearly head-on at "highway speeds." The passenger of the Camry was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the car was taken to the hospital.

The 20-year-old driver of the Avalanche told medical crews he might have fallen asleep at the wheel.

LOCATION: Colorado 287 at milepost 351. ( Just north of Ft. Collins, CO.)

On 5-31-08 at approximately 10:24 A.M. Troopers responded to both lanes of Colorado 287 at milepost 351.
A white 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche was traveling southbound on Colorado 287 and a gold 2002 Toyota was traveling northbound on Colo. 287. The Chevy Avalanche drifted onto the northbound lane and struck the Toyota in a head-on manner. The Chevy rolled 1/4 time onto its left side and came to rest facing in a southbound manner while on the southbound shoulder. The Toyota went off the southbound side of the roadway and came to rest facing in a northerly manner.

The restrained driver of the Chevy has been identified as Gregory P.
Nessler, 20 of Ft. Collins CO. Nessler sustained minor injuries and was transported by ambulance to Poudre Valley Hospital of Ft. Collins, CO.
A restrained passenger within the Chevy has been identified as Tyler Santomaso, 20 of Ft. Collins, CO. Santomaso sustained minor injuries and was also transported by ambulance to Poudre Valley Hospital.

The restrained driver of the Toyota has been identified as Amy V. White, 24 of Denver, CO. White sustained serious injuries and was transported by ambulance to Poudre Valley Hospital.
A restrained passenger within the Toyota has been identified as Christopher E. Douglas, 28 of Lisbon, ME. Douglas sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene by the Larimer County Coroner.

Colorado 287 was closed for approximately four hours for accident investigation.

Drugs are suspected as contributing factors on the part of the driver of the Chevy Avalanche.

Mr. Nessler has been arrested and transported to the Larimer County Jail and has been charged with the following:

1 count of vehicular homicide a class 3 felony
1 count of vehicular assault a class 4 felony Possession of a scheduled II substance a class 4 felony Driving under the influence of a drug a misdemeanor
1 count of careless driving causing injury a misdemeanor Displayed a fictitious drivers license a misdemeanor traffic offense.

A mug shot of Mr. Nessler will be provided once it becomes available.
Next of kin have been notified.
