Does anybody know why the RS Pro-106,197,164 & 163 are being sent back to distribution nationwide ?
My guess is that areas such as Houston that are now migrating to P25 are asking for them in mass ?
So for Houston this would explain the reason for the Digital Scanners models such as the Pro-106/197.
However, for the Analog Trunking models such as the Pro-164/163, maybe just for older analog areas.
It would be nice to just round them up so folks could have a supply of them online or for Direct2U orders.

My thoughts turn now to any folks that still wanted to purchase any of these 4 Radio Shack models ?

It would appear to be a GREat time to make your move before the end of this week on a new unit !!!

So ACT NOW while they are on sale and while you can still find the model you have been wanting ;)

Is this only Radio Shack sending them back or other sellers such as ScannerMaster? I noticed the other day that Radio Shack was pushing Uniden scanners on its homepage, not Radio Shack models. Maybe some sort of a new agreement with Uniden that requires RS to stop selling remaining GRE-made models?? Just speculation.

With some vendors, when a product's manufacturer ceases production (as GRE did many months ago), and when vendor's in-store inventories drop below a certain level, the remainder will be returned to the vendor's nationwide distribution center to collect them in one place and then make them available as an online-only item. This might be what RS is doing. Maybe an RS employee can clarify.

Hope this helps,

Where did this news come from? I have not heard anything about stores returning inventory. The only official news was this morning's stock report with RadioShack reporting terrible figures as usual. My local stores still show the same scanner models in stock according the RS website.

I checked RS' online sales circular and didn't see anything about this or those models for sale..

Digicircle has ended up with a large number of PRO-163 and PRO-164 radios in recent weeks and in various conditions. No 106's or 197's though.

Thanks for the link, just bought two. 85 bucks is about the right price for these LOL!

It would be a tradegy if the 106 and 197 were to be discontinued.

GRE made the official announcement last October. (Several other threads discussed it in depth, so I won't here.) For the last several months, Radio Shack's site has listed both the RS106 and RS197 (and many other GRE/RS models) as "out-of-stock". Several vendors are now sold-out of GRE/RS radios. Now, accessories and replacement parts are becoming hard to find.

Hope this helps,

The original poster is undoubtedly aware of GRE halting production. The specific question was why radios that were still in stock locally were being shipped back. And if I'm not mistaken, the OP is in a better position to know what goes on inside Radio Shack stores than the rest of us.

Ding Ding Ding ..... give Mike (fredva) a Gold Star ;)

ps ~ the Pro-197's are going to Houston help feed the commercial frenzy to equip tow trucks, etc.
before the UHF conventional system is shut down next month as planned is all I know so far.
My reason for posting was to shake the bushes and see what the other 3-ish insiders know ;)

TxWarn P25 is & will be a mixed mode Phase I & II TRS

I doubt it. The 197 won't receive Phase 2.

FYI ~ The Houston area TxWarn P25 is & will be a mixed mode Phase I & II TRS.

TxWarn P25 Simulcast Layers 1 & 2 are just Phase 1 and YES the RS Pro-197 will work GREat ;)
There is a radio shop gobbling up RS Pro-197's for use in commercial vehicles such as wreckers.
The Towing Dispatches will go out on TG's that are only Phase 1 and Pro-197 will fill this need fine.
I'm pretty sure considering the mass quantity this dealer is buying they have done their homework !

OK, back to wishing that ... a shiney new GRE PSR-900 would magically appear in my shack :)
for when the Alamo City gets delt the P25 Phase II card in the not to distant 2015/2016 future ... grrr

I just watched a mint Pro-197 go unsold on eBay - strange...and not for an outlandish price either.

ps ~ LlScanner101, be patient it's only been 2 weeks in the making ... most folks have no clue yet
what is going on supply wise ... besides the panic most likely won't set in for several months.
So yes for now enjoy buying Pro-197's for reasonable prices on the many outlets at present.
As a side note, just think of how cheap you could buy PSR-800's for just a year ago today.
I still can't get my mind around me not snapping one up for $250-ish on ebay just a year ago ;)
So as the supply of Pro-197's dries up and the demand goes up so will the used prices too !

Thanks! That's good news about the Phase 1. My Pro-197 will hopefully come in handy. My reception hasn't been very good since simulcast was added, so maybe there will be better coverage or something once everything falls into place with the new system.

I too would like a shiny new PSR-900 or a great new Uniden Phase 2 capable receiver. Surely one is in the works from somewhere! One can only hope. . . :)

Funny. This reminds me of my other hobby - surf casting:

I’m not sure if anyone on here surf casts in the New England area, but there are TWO makers of an extremely high-end, costly, nuke-proof spinning reel that is waterproof. These reels have around for a while now, and even though I bought my stash when they first came out in the early 90’s for around $300 apiece, my understanding is that they are now hovering very close to the $900 mark. They are NOT going away anytime soon so the price is driven solely by the niche market it serves and the cost associated with a low-volume specialty reel.
Now back to scanners. Unlike fishing (which will be around as long as there are fish in the sea), the listenable agency “candidates” is dropping, and possibly some day it will be so small that the scanning hobby will dry up and disappear. I think manufacturers realize this and will scale back on what they put out. Look, Uniden came out with the Home Patrol in 2010 – it’s now 2013. GRE is gone. The writing is on the wall.
