To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

First of all, let me stress I have a Motorola account number and I'm trying to legally purchase CPS for a GP 680 radio. The problem is that I'm in the US and that radio is usually sold in the UK. I'm only using the single radio inside a shielded box to try to connect to an Aeroflex unit, but if my experience with other radios is any indicator I'll need to change some settings in either the radio or the Aeroflex to make the radio register. So I'm looking for the part number for the CPS for a GP 680 that I can purchase in the US. I'm getting a little bit of a runaround from Motorola.

It's complicated because this radio seems to share some characteristics with the HT series, I know the same programming cable works for both. First they told me HVN9025 would work. Then they backpedaled and sent me to an international dealer who said ENLN4116, but I don't know if I can purchase that in the US.

At any rate, has anyone programmed a GP680 (or just read the info, I probably can alter the Aeroflex settings to match the radio)? If so what CPS part number do you need? Do you know how I can legally acquire that in the US?

Thanks.

Probably wrong, but i was lead to believe that the difference was cosmetic only, for the different market...Supposedly, the comparable HT-series CPS should work... Like i said, probably wrong, but that's what i was told when i was considering buying a GP-series radio...

There are more differences than just cosmetic as the radio is manufactured for the European market. What is needed to program it is the European version of the CPS.

The GP 680 is not type accepted for use in the US, either so that legally restricts its use to the ham market.

For the OP, there's a lot of info about the European version of the CPS over on the Batboard.

The most recent CPS for programming the EMEA versions of GP professional series such as the GP680 shows as ENVN4006U dated Aug 2011 version R00.08.08 when starting the CPS. The CPS to buy on a CD is part no: ENLN4116P

On my MOL account (I'm in Great Britain) I can download this under the resource section of analogue portable radios.

I'm sure you won't be able to officially get this from Moto via your US MOL log account. I've read in the past that HT CPS won't program GP series and vice versa.

He'll need to contact Motorola Europe to purchase the CPS. Motorola US will not touch it.

I just thought I'd provide an update. I contacted Motorola about this predicament and they referred me to a US based international dealer. This dealer was able to get me a software package that would work for this radio.

To be honest that makes at least some sense. I know that MPT1327 isn't used much in the US but there are a few systems, including one a few hours away from me for a power plant. I went out and collected some of it on the USRP, only got the FM/MSK control channel but it's there. So it must not be illegal and there must be some way of programming the radios.

The user interface was ancient but I finally got it talking to our Aeroflex unit. Now, if I could just figure out the SmartNet handset and CPS (another topic).
