From CSP PIO

The Colorado State Patrol is investigating a crash that resulted in two fatalities near Limon this morning. At 6:28 a.m., a 2003 Volvo truck-tractor towing a loaded horse trailer was traveling westbound on I-70, near milepost 363. The Volvo drifted onto the westbound shoulder and collided with two pedestrians, who were changing a flat tire on a 2007 Pontiac Vibe. The Volvo stopped approximately 1/2 mile west of the crash scene.

The pedestrians--48-year-old Shun Jones of Carrollton, Texas, and 38-year-old Amanda Omo-Iyamu of Balch Springs, Texas--sustained fatal injuries as a result of the collision. The Pontiac's sole occupant--18-year-old Lamarcus Lockett of Carrollton--was not injured.

The Volvo's driver--37-year-old Michel (pronounced "Michael") Martin of Sulphur, Louisiana--was wearing his seatbelt and was not injured during the crash.
Alcohol and drug use are not suspected as contributing factor in the crash. Charges against Martin are pending.

I've been on the road around truckers that would appear to play a kind of game where they drift to the shoulder ... The purpose? Perhaps to see if they can suck the doors off cars pulled over on the shoulder.

I wonder if this is the case... and he just missed...

The configuration of tractor and trailer in this incident is unusual, but not rare-

A nearly full-sized tractor ten-wheeled, with a trailer more suited for a 3/4 ton fifth-wheel passenger truck.

Since the rig has to be impounded for an accident scene involving death, I can only hope the owners of the horses responded from Texas and properly cared for them; we rescue horses from these situations more often than I care to admit. Even a temporary 'corral' situation handled by the County is not always the situation you want to put them in, but since the horses are property there's only so much that can be overlooked before some intervention needs to be done.
