• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

There are a couple of industry variations of this:

Some radios can have a "man down" sensor installed in them. This is a tilt switch that will trigger when the radio goes into a horizontal position for the set period of time. Usually when it goes into this mode, a timer starts and an alert sounds through the radio speaker. The radio user has a set amount of time to acknowledge the alert or an alarm is sent out.

The other version is what Alex mentioned above. Problem with that article is it's claim to these functions being a "digital only" feature. That isn't the case, many, many analog only radios will do this.

I'm not paying attention to what the new crop of CCR's are including, so not sure which version it has.

Can be a useful function if it's set up and used correctly. If it isn't set up correctly it just becomes an annoyance for the radio user, or a constant source of false alarms to Dispatch.

On the TYT MD-series radios, it's a simple timer. If the user has not keyed the mic in x number of minutes, the radio sounds an audio alert. If the user does not respond to the alert by keying the mic or pressing a button, the radio automatically broadcasts an emergency alert over the air with the ID of the radio. The feature is only available on digital channels because the radio sends the ID as a packet of digital data.

It's intended for commercial use, but can be handy if you're hiking or doing some other activity where a member of your group could be separated, lost, or injured. Or if you want your kids to check in regularly.

That has already been asked by you, and answered in other threads. Go away.

LAPD had these man down alarms many years ago. While going to paramedic school in Inglewood and working the USC medical Center we heard an officer down alarm on one of the officers radios.

They tore out of there fast, but they were back pretty fast and laughing. When we ask what the call was about, apparently an officer wasn't paying attention when the new man down system was explained. As officers entered the location of the alarm guns drawn, lets say the officer wasn't in distress, but his pants and radio were in the prone position. Polaroids were taken I'm told.....
