I can't find any MWARA 8.888MHz frequency. 8.879 is the Indian Ocean 3 and NAT C, 8.891 is NAT D.

If he's readable, a bit more info might help - ground station name or aircraft rego perhaps

8888 is/was a regional (RDARA) frequency in the southern African continent (in the vicinity of the AFR-4 area) and was one of the very first stations I heard nearly 20 years ago. It was also a VOLMET frequency in north-central Russia back then too. No idea if it's still active in either location but I suspect since you heard it then it may well be. Great catch! (y)

Recently I've heard Luanda, Angola using 8888 or 5565 in their Flight Information Region (FIR).

When I first heard it circa 2003/2004 I was bombarded with "It's the VOLMET from Russia you're hearing" until I provided two-way English comms and the ACID (flight IDs) to go with it including the obvious mention of Kinshasa if memory serves. I have caught very weak traces of the VOLMET since but it's RDARA use in Africa has completely eluded me over the many admittedly brief times I've tried. It's been "memory #99" in the R75 since that first log though, just in case!

My immediate area has suffered from ever-increasing man-made RF noise over the last 10+ years of 'farmer's fields become urban sprawl' so I'm thinking this is yet another hobby that my current location is never going to be co-operative with again.

If you're not already doing so, here's a handy and current chart of VOLMET frequencies worldwide. You can easily look at frequency bands vs. time of day and with a little persistence and understanding of propagation tendencies during any 24 period get a pattern of what you can receive. When a VOLMET broadcast is active it's a continuous broadcast for that period, maybe only 10 minutes, maybe a full hour or more. Makes it easier than not knowing if the frequency you're sitting on inactive or if you're just not receiving it. Bill Hepburn has been doing this for decades so I'd consider him the reference standard in charting these broadcasts.

And you'll see the 8888 VOLMET broadcast listed from 3 locations.

Used to hear Luanda Radio on this freq. Unknown if still used.

Couple nights ago I heard some Asian fishermen on 8888.8 USB.
