LOCATION: Colorado 66 169' W. of North 61St. St. (Boulder County)
On 9-19-08 at approximately 7:52 P.M. Troopers responded to Colorado 66 near the intersection of North 61St.
A black 2007 Subaru Legacy was traveling eastbound on Colorado 66 approaching north 61St. A white 2001 Ford F-350 pickup truck pulling a camper trailer was westbound on Colorado 66. The Subaru was passing in a passing zone and made a lane change back onto the eastbound lane to avoid oncoming traffic. The driver overcorrected with too much steering input and induced the vehicle to rotate counter clockwise and out of control. The vehicle rotated 1/4 of a revolution and crossed back into the westbound lane and collided with the pickup truck. After impact the Subaru rotated clockwise 1 1/4 revolution and came to rest on its wheels facing east in a nearby ditch just north of the roadway. The pickup truck, after impact rotated 1/2 revolution in a clockwise manner, ran off the right side of the roadway and rolled 1/4 time onto its left side and came to rest facing east in the ditch. The trailer remained on its wheels and came to rest facing north in the ditch.
The restrained driver has been identified as a 17 year old male from Longmont, CO. The juvenile sustained serious to critical injuries and was airlifted from the scene and transported to St. Anthony Central in Denver, CO. The driver's name is being with held at this time due to next of kin notification.
A restrained female passenger has been identified as Caitlin A. Epple, 18 of Longmont, CO. Epple sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene by the Boulder County Coroner.
The restrained driver of the Ford pickup truck has been identified as Gregory C. Sutliff, 44 of Brighton, CO. Sutliff sustained serious injuries and was transported to Longmont United Hospital by ambulance.
A restrained female passenger within the pick up truck has been identified as Mary J. Sutliff, 44 of Brighton, CO. Sutliff sustained moderate injuries and was transported to Longmont United Hospital by ambulance.
Alcohol and drugs are not suspected as contributing factors, however speed and driver error is suspected.
This incident is still under investigation.
