Does anybody happen to know what frequencies are used in the Best Buy stores in the Rockford Illinois area? I tried the FCC search, but "Best Buy" isn't found using their search criteria.

I can think of several reasons to monitor a department store. You might be surprised by what you hear. If you are listening to the security or loss prevention freq you might hear some interesting stuff.

Including where they are so you can elude them?

I don't know, but this strikes me as a no-go area. Listening to Public Safety, aircraft, railroads, etc. is one thing, but listening to a private business's in-house traffic is another area. Even cabs and wreckers are on the open roads, so I can see that as being OK.

Here we're talking about communications that are meant to be kept within their walls literally.

You might be suprised at what folks listen to besides your local Police/Fire/EMS.

DEA, ICE, Boats, Trains, Planes, Tow Trucks, Mil-Air, Mil-LMR, Mil-Boats, Stores, Malls, Cruise Ships, Colleges, LandScapers, Tourist Attractions.

Even the NFL and Quarterbacks. :D

OK, I've heard of people monitoring some strange stuff, but a retail store?

Mall security is among some of the most entertaining listening! Especially if you have the "keystone cops" like we do.
Sometimes they actually do app. a shoplifter but I think it has more to do with his/her stupidity then the loss prevention tactics used.

Many malls use repeaters with outputs in the 464.325 to 464.975 in 50kHz increments (except for a couple freqs that are itinerant only). I can hear a couple of malls that are over 10 miles away.

These repeater freqs are also common for "local control" of facilities and campuses such as hospitals.

True, except for eastland mall which is on 461.6375/ D114 and is very low power.

Every Best Buy that I've been in, granted very small number, they use Family radios FRS to communicate with each other.

Location of store.... Best Buy #45 ----- 5505 E STATE ST, ROCKFORD, IL
Call Sign is - WNWH809

Don't know if this is the store your looking for nut this is what I found by doing an FCC search. I used their corporate address in Minneapolis, Mn.These are listed as expired but I bet they still use them. As far as I can tell from the 50 or so stores I looked at they all use the same frequencies. Hope this helps!

Try this site next time. "http://www.antennasearch.com" just put in the address info and do an antenna search for the area. This will give you a 4 mile radius from the input location. I have been able to fine a lot of frequencies using this. I use this site when I can't find something on the FCC site! Works very well for me...

Thanks to all for the speedy replies. wv_mountaineer, thanks for the link. A lot of useful info there. Just an FYI, i work in retail, right across the street from a Best Buy, and it can be some very interesting listening. People using radios seem to forget that their conversation is floating through the air. Confuzzled, regarding your comments that i partially quoted below, i believe that if we were not meant to listen to radio conversations, they would be encrypted so we could not monitor them and the frequencies and radio licensing information would not be available to the general public. I suppose that everyone that listens to their local police must be trying to elude them also. Private business communications are not meant or designed to be "kept within their walls", as you so eloquently put it.

One retailer listening to another could get very interesting legally.

Scanning Lawyers now, next thing will be pigs flying.

"Can you get me the correct price on the XXXL sweatshirts"
"Do we have the Baby-Doll Web Cam Barbie in Hot Pink?".

Yup, lots of theft of Corporate Secrets from Box Stores.
