My aunts recently had their old RS Pro-136 go dead and they wants me to find them a replacement in a desktop style.

Our area (30547) is all conventional on narrowband and a scanner to do PL / CTCSS and tagging would be helpful. Also weather alert would be nice. Which from my research there isn't one

Now I have a scanner I'm not using (BCT15) but really don't want to have to drive over there when they hit the wrong buttons and screw it up so looking for something that's easy to use..basically set and forget.

Best desktop style I can come up with is the Uniden Bearcat BC370CRS. The vhf highband does a 5 khz so worse cause volume maybe a little low . Also vhf highband will be all they'll really listen to.

SO what do you think/recommend? thanks!

thanks for the reply but would really like to get them a desktop style instead of a base/mobile style..if you know what I mean.

May just give them the bct15 and tell them be careful and don't hit any of the buttons just turn it on and off as needed.

Oh, I see, something that is kinda laying down instead of having the menu facing forward. Well there is also these scanners.

I saw those the 200u and pro-405 are basically same and will take narrowband but strange thing is it wont do it via keypad but must use software...psredit...

may look into the 200u as price for used ones are pretty cheap and does support narrowband.

Thanks

Okay, are you all set with a good antenna for the scanner?

The indoor antenna supplied should be good enough for what they'll use it for. They have always had a desktop/tabletop style scanner since the early 70's and always used the indoor antenna.

Right now when they hear a siren they've been turning on a pro-83 scanner I gave then a few years back of course it uses batteries so they don't keep it on for long.

Think I'll get their old scanner and see for sure if its dead or what and let them use my BCT15 for a while and see how they like it and they have no issues I'll let them keep it but if they keep messing it up I'll get them the 200u.

Why don't you see if the wal wart is bad? may be just a simple replacement.

They said it turns on but no longer picks up anything.

Going to go visit them tonight and take a look at it I think its about 20 years old so time for a replacement anyways...

Fortunately, GA
Pro-163 would be a good choice for an analog scanner that supports narrowbanding and alphatags. Only ten banks, so they can't mess up by pushing too many buttons:D It comes with a telescoping antenna that does quite well for VHF frequencies.

What was the out come of your visit to your aunts?
Did you determine what was wrong with there radio?
Did you get them a new one and if so how do they like it?
Don't leave us hanging.
