• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

cb radio tuned peaked | eBay

ebay, the CB store right in your own living room lol

The Galaxy DX959 has been proven to be awesome. I'm not a cobra man. I like the Texas Ranger and Galaxy CB's. The Galaxy's with 3 numbers, like 959, 979, are CB's not illegal HAM's converted like the DX 33 etc., with 2 numbers.

If you like to talk side band (Being up in the sticks, I recommend a side band), make sure you get one with a freq counter built in. The Ranger, Galaxy, Connex etc. does have a plugin for an external freq counter. Others, like Cobra's there is a plug in the box that a shop can install to plug in the external counter. They cost about $100 to buy and install.

The Grey/Silver Galaxy bases are 40 channel legal CB's. and are very nice radios..

buy from someone with a 4 digit star count and is a radio shop. Don't buy from someone who is also selling toys etc, thats not a shop, prolly someone selling out of their garage.

When I searched for a CB shop in Maine, there was several that popped up. Try to look for a shop in google... Like this one...

Radio Communications Maine

bye, good luck :)

save your money

just buy a cb and be happy.
to quote the late bill cheek "there is no golden screwdriver".
to turn a knob will not double the output on a radio.
i have seen "peaked and tuned" radio in the factory wrapper.

I disagree.
You can tune a radio for optimal performance often better than is done by hand at manufacture.
The people doing the alignments are often going for within spec and not optimal.

There is room to get more out of them most of the time... but your not going to get MUCH more out of it... and not to the tune that a lot of these guys are getting.
You can get something.... but your not going to go from 4 watts to 15 watts on a device rated for 7.
If you have something showing you 15 watts from say, a 2SC2078.. then your transmitter is beyond dirty and your using a broadband wattmeter.

So I think you can get more out of a "stock" radio - just nowhere near what they tend to claim.

No such thing as peaked and tuned. The translation of "peaked and tuned" is deliberately broken.
You don't want some self proclaimed "genius" clipping out transistors, diodes and resistors and "turning up" every pot on the board.

The best that can be done, is read reviews, buy a good out of box radio and find a local ham who has the equipment and aptitude who is willing to align the radio. They come out of the box pretty good, but someone who has the knowledge and time to sit down with the radio 1 on 1 can tighten up the alignment.
They can also feed the radio with a spec audio signal and adjust for 100% modulation. The max legally, most CBs will modulate 80-90% out of the box, the manufacturer does this to guarantee FCC acceptance with the stock mic. This is far different from the yahoos that just clip out the AF limiter causing the radio to modulate 140% or more. That doesn't mean more power, it means a really really sh***y signal.

Get a good radio and have someone who actually knows how to repair radios make sure it is aligned nicely and modulating cleanly.

Cheers.

^ This.
Perhaps I should go into business... :)

I always have to put back parts that were removed... it's a shame that people destroy perfectly functional gear in the name of the almighty watt... and they think they are getting more to boot.

I agree with the guys above.
Get a decent radio "out of the box" and have it serviced by a respectable radio shop.
However, a good radio with a crap antenna will give you crap performance no matter what you do.
Spend the money on the best antenna you can afford and have it tuned to your radio.
