• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

If you mean you want to disable just the transmit (and not receive) on an individual radio in the field through the PassPort controller, then no. If you want to disable a lost or stolen radio, you just move the user from "Valid" to "Stun" in the controller, then the radio will no longer transmit or receive.

I would think that the radio itself could be programmed for transmit disable. I know on Kenwood radios, each talkgroup that is programmed in has a setting for transmit disabled or enabled, but I do not know about the other manufacturers.

Motorola Passport radios can be programmed for disabled transmit on certain talkgroups also although they still have to afiliate or register with the system before they will receive the talkgroup regardless on whether or not it was already being carried on that tower or not.

The controller can be set for stun on certain radio ID's or MINS. This is used mostly for seasonal customers or if somebody hasn't been paying their bills. When the radio tries to register with the system it will show as Disabled.

The owner also has the option to turn on ESN validation. If a radio tries to spoof another radio ID with a different ESN then what is programmed into the Home site for that talkgroup, it also shows disabled but I believe it can also be killed depending on how the controller was programmed.

The controller also has the Kill command which is similar to the inhibit command on a Moto Type II system. Not sure if the radio can be revived by reprogramming or if it has to go to the Depot as I never did see one come into our service shop after it had been killed.

If you are looking to passively monitor your local system with a Passport Radio, it can't be done. Your best bet is to park your scanner on the home channel and hope the system isn't too busy.

Yes, the system will stun the radio with the spoofed MIN as well as the legitimate radio that uses that MIN. So if I want to fsck with your largest customer, all I have to do is program their dispatch radio's MIN into my 1250LS+ and every time I power up the radio, it'll knock the dispatch radio off the air. Great system design, eh?

Hmmmm I didn't know that but nothing would surprise me with /\/\ and Trident.

Same here, but this one falls squarely on Trident's shoulders; they designed the protocol and the stun command just blindly targets the MIN. Any radios that match will go to sleep.

I never did encounter a CDM (Passport) that had been killed (Not stunned) in the NTS Commander. Could they be revived through reprogramming or did they have to go to the depot?

Depot wouldn't go over very well with system owners. It should just take a read/write with the programming software (e.g. PPCPS for Moto gear).

"The PassPort protocol includes the KILL command, which completely disables a radio. Once disabled with the KILL command, only an authorized dealer can restore the radio to service. The extent of disability resulting from the KILL command and the procedure for restoring the radio to service varies from manufacturer to manufacturer. A radio can be KILLed by using NTS Commander to set the status of the MIN record to KILL. Once the status of the MIN record is set to KILL, the KILL command will be sent to the radio the next time it attempts to register."
