Any updates to what's in the database for the City of Madison TRS? I've noticed several new occasional LE talk groups, including a change for MPD Channel 3 from 40080, as listed in the database, to 43248. Any new, more comprehensive lists available?

I haven't noticed any other changes. The database seems accurate. I'm still hearing 40080 along with the new 43248, but I haven't taken the time to figure out what the difference is, if any.

Actually, I think that they've been using both of those talk groups for quite a while.

As far as I know, one TG is the regular MPD channel 3 and the other is actually on the MPD parking enforcement officers radios as their main channel. Once in a while you will hear the parking officers getting info on the data channel and then say that they are going back to such and such channel (B14 or something). I just can't remember what channel it is.

But anyway, as far as I can tell it's the same channel as far as radio traffic.

I don't know if the parking enforcement channel and 3 are patched together or how that actually works. I asked someone around a year and a half ago about that and that is sort of the story I got.

Clear as mud right?

Yep, both talkgroups have been active for some time. Law enforcement (not parking) radio traffic has been quite prevalent on them evenings--and not with the same traffic. Dispatch has assigned squads to Channel 3 and they've shown up on 43248, when it used to be 40080. I've not heard a channel reference to 40080 recently, but it's definitely in use. Could be different decks, I suppose, but patrol has been using them both when activity is high--again evenings and nights.

Using ID Search, I've found several more unidentified law enforcement talk groups that have recently gone active, but for only very sporadic conversations--nothing for weeks at a time on some of them. (You have to enter all of the system talk groups in the scanner, lock them out, and search will then ignore them--that's problematic on the 396 since this system has more than 200 talk groups ... but if you choose the 200 wisely, search is helpful at finding these new ones.) More on those as may be appropriate (they really should be encrypting some of these ...).

I'm a little amazed that the CPT teams and the task force guys don't use more Nextel type communications instead of over the air. I don't think they have encyption possibilities on the Madison 800 system. At least not that I've ever heard.

They tend to mix it up on the channels whether they are doing stuff on A8 District Ops, 10 Test team channel, 14 investigator,15 or the task force channel itself. It seems like it varies.

Some updates/items of interest from the most recent published minutes:

A rebanding agreement has been signed with Sprint-Nextel. S-N is performing the necessary relicensing activities and clearing its operations from the future public safety band. Sprint-Nextel will provide loaner repeaters to link old and new ICALL and ITAC1 channels during the reprogramming process. Public works radios will be reprogrammed before Halloween, and public safety afterward. ...

[They will] discuss failsoft and talkgroup updates to be made during the rebanding process.

[The UW Athletic Department will be receiving 800 MHz radios for game event deployment.]

[They will be investigating iDEN integration with the Madison Trunking System for deployment during special events.]
