Governor Schwarzenegger Issues Statement on Death of Three United States Forest Service Firefighters Battling Wildfires in San Bernardino County

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger today released the following statement regarding the death of three United States Forest Service Firefighters battling wildfires in San Bernardino County:

"Maria and I were shocked and saddened to learn of the deaths of the three brave firefighters early this morning. In attempting to save residents' homes and lives, they sacrificed their own. Our hearts go out to their families during this difficult time. We also are praying for the recovery of two other critically injured firefighters. These men and women risk their lives on a daily basis and we are forever grateful for their service. We will put the full force of the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection behind fighting this fire and will reach out to evacuees to see what can be done in their time of need. "

I went to work this morning and the fire was burning right behind our plant. Came back in from the desert and man that thing is really blazing. Also heard there were two firefighters killed and two others are in critical. Burning toward the Twin Pines area. Passed by the Banning Airport on my way home and saw 4 to 5 copters and also saw that Apache copter sitting there.

FEMA AUTHORIZES FUNDS TO HELP CALIFORNIA FIGHT ESPARANZA FIRE

OAKLAND, Ca – The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), today authorized the use of federal funds to help California fight the Esparanza fire burning in Riverside County.

FEMA Region IX Director Nancy Ward said the state’s request for federal fire management assistance was approved after it was confirmed the Esperanza wildfire drove 200 people from their homes Thursday morning as it raced through the desert hills northwest of Palm Springs. The blaze burned more than 1,000 acres by midmorning, and 25 mph winds were quickly spreading the flames. The Soboba Native American Reservation is evacuating their casino. About 200 people left their homes when mandatory evacuations were ordered.

"It's critical that the men and women who selflessly battle wildfires know they will continue to have the support of the federal government. This declaration is one demonstration of that support," FEMA Director David R. Paulison said. “Our hearts go out to the firefighters killed and injured and their families.”

The authorization makes FEMA funding available to pay 75 percent of the state’s eligible firefighting costs under an approved grant for managing, mitigating and controlling designated fires.

Federal fire management assistance is provided through the President’s Disaster Relief Fund and made available by FEMA to assist in fighting fires that threaten to cause a major disaster. Eligible state firefighting costs covered by the aid must first meet a minimum threshold for costs before assistance is provided. Eligible costs covered by the aid can include expenses for field camps; equipment use, repair and replacement; tools, materials and supplies; and mobilization and demobilization activities.

Forest Service Releases Names of Deceased and Injured
Four fatalities and one injured while fighting wildfire
SAN BERNARDINO, CALIF. – It is with great sadness that we confirm the names of the Forest Service firefighters who tragically lost their lives while in the line of duty yesterday. The deceased are Mark Loutzenhiser, Jess McLean, Jason McKay, and Daniel Hoover-Najera. Critically injured is Pablo Cerda.

Mark Loutzenhiser, Engine Captain, was 44 years old and had 21 years of service. He was a certified Emergency Medical Technician (EMT). He had worked previously as a hotshot for the Vista Grande Hot Shots and also as a volunteer firefighter for Riverside County. He majored in fire science at Mt. San Jacinto College. He was a longtime resident of Idyllwild, Calif. where he was a great supporter and coach for the youth sports program.

Jess McLean, Fire Engine Operator, was 27 years old and had seven years of service. He had been a hotshot for three years with Vista Grande. He graduated from Banning High School in 1997 and attended fire science classes at Crafton Hills College. He was a resident of Beaumont, Calif.

Jason McKay, Assistant Fire Engine Operator, was 27 years old and had five years of Forest Service experience and four years as a volunteer firefighter in Adelanto. He also served on the Mojave Greens Type II crew. He was a certified EMT and earned an associate’s degree in Fire Science. He was a resident of Phelan, Calif.

Daniel Hoover-Najera, Firefighter, was 20 years old and was in his second season of firefighting. He worked on the Tahquitz Type II crew in 2005 and was a seasonal employee in 2006. He graduated from San Jacinto Mountain View High School in 2004. He was a resident of San Jacinto, Calif.

Pablo Cerda, who remains in critical condition, is a 23-year-old Firefighter in his second season with the Forest Service. He was previously of the Tahquitz Type II crew. He graduated from Los Amigos High School in Santa Ana in 2001 and attended Fire Academy of Riverside Community College. He is a resident of Fountain Valley, Calif.

The five Forest Service employees were on Engine Crew 57 on the San Jacinto Ranger District. They were dispatched early Thursday morning to assist on a state managed wildfire, the Esperanza Incident. They were engaging in structure protection and firefighting activities when they where overrun by flames. The accident investigation is ongoing.

“Our deepest condolences go out to the families during this very tragic time,” said Jeanne Wade Evans, San Bernardino National Forest Supervisor. “All of us on the forest and in the fire service community are suffering a great loss.”
