Hello, I have been working on a manual programming of my Pro-651.
When programming a Trunk System or maybe even a Conventional system is there a place or time to name a Talkgroup ???? Rather than using a number only ????
It appears that after the Trunked System info is entered and you punch in Talkgroup numbers or punch Wildcard that there is no place for a name for different Talkgroups.
I have a list of about 31 Trunked freqs. and a fair size list of Talkgroups it would seem that it would be a lot of scanning with out any names other than numbers. Of course I could always back check the numbers against the list .
Maybe I missed something , well I am still rather new to scanning , but were working on it.

Redneck0410 was going to make your programming file for you since he has ARC500. See your other post.

He said:
"Essentially, it would be easier to delete what you have set up for SD Radio System and start from scratch. The only thing you will have to change, I believe, is the system type from Motorola VHF to P25 Auto. Are you following strictly public safety or a combination of several entities? Reason I ask is I am working on a file for you that all you will have to do is upload it to your scanner and you're golden."

You didnt answer his question on what you want programmed in. Let him make you one and try that. That is going to be the simplest thing to do.

Hello, and I really want to Thank You so much for your help. So far I really like this scanner. Its just a matter of me understanding and getting use to the method of programming it. I am determined not to let it get the best of this old fellow. I will eventually will get the software and try programming it with that.
But I believe getting use to doing it manually first will help when i do that.

You are correct. Its always good to know how to manually make changes or entries. And being familiar with the manual radio setup will expedite learning and even selecting your preferences in software. Especially true for a hand held because it won't always be sitting beside a computer when you want to make a change or addition on the fly.

Hi marksmith, and TNX. I can see you have several scanners . I was wondering what software you might be using ????
There are quite a few out there to choose from.

ARC500 for the Pro-652.
Freescan for the 996's and 396's.
Sentinel versions for each of the HP radios (different by radio).
EZScan for the PSR-800.

You have to use software that is compatible with the radio. In most cases more than 1 application can be used but in some, like the HP radios and PSR-800 you need to use the specific software to update database or firmware.
The Uniden xt radios don't have specific software requirements or any database updates to update. Same with the 652. These are both radios that memory contains only what you program.

I am trying to learn how to program a Radio Shack 651 for a Friend for Cecil County Maryland, Harford County Maryland, New Castle County Delaware, West Chester County Pennsylvania, Lancaster County Pennsylvania, and Kent County Maryland to start. I need to find out which services he wants to add, but need I'd tags on screen to tell service and location. I want to learn how to due it including advanced programing. I want to put each county in different banks per my friends request.

Depending on how many talkgroups your friend is wanting to put into this scanner, it may serve you better to just do the programming via a computer. There is less chance of something getting messed up that could potentially take a while to diagnose/fix. Also, a factor to consider is if the 651 will even pick up the systems your friend wishes to monitor. A quick database search using the counties you listed reveals Chester County is P25 Phase II, which the 651 will not monitor. That is the only one I found from your list the 651 won't pick up. Everything else is trunked and/or conventional.

Agreed on user a computer; in fact there's a side benefit to doing that - you can give your friend a soft copy of your programming so that if he hoses it up, it's simple to restore it.

If you want to do this manually (I wouldn't, given the number of systems to be programmed), the 651 is a PSR-500 under the covers, so this will help...

and should you decide to go the computer route and get the cable, you will need software...

And as for how to use the software, we have user guides for ARC500 and Win500 linked at the bottom of;

It can be done, but it requires a vast level of patience that not a lot of folks may possess anymore.

Its not that bad. If you use RR as your reference, take it one step at a time, no more than one system per day at most... A couple days for a big one, its not that bad to do manual if you have the time.

Create system, add site frequencies, and slowly add talkgroups and descriptions.
