Many of my GMRS friends use Pre MDC. With the sidetone enabled on your XTS, it actually helps people cutting of the first words of their transmissions.
The sidetone on a Motorola is really loud and usually people will get used to speaking AFTER it's finished. Also, it's generally better to have MDC data sent at PTT press down.
I agree mostly. I mean yes, it's easy to tell them to wait for the beep, and without that (like on the baofengs) people usually speak too soon.
However we have an old ffirefighter who we love, and like being used to the old radios I can almost understand him talking during the sidetone... but man he starts talking way before even pressing the button half the time lmao. I swear when we hear the mumble of the end of his voice, dispatch just assumes what he's saying based on order of events (en route, on scene, en route to hospital, ect). When he has more complex messages/requests, it can be confusing at times.
Hi again to anyone monitoring this thread still!
So we have deemed it acceptable to use MDC codes on gmrs, now is the emergency button on Motorola radios allowed to be used? I mean in testing circumstances. If I were to test the button by pressing it once or twice, is that against the law? Is it considered sending a false emergency if I press the button for testing purposes or can I do it with no worry?
I'd set the radio to be on a quiet channel at low power when testing, infact I do, and before/after activation I announce at a higher power that I'm testing it. Again it uses MDC so it is allowed on GMRS, either way if it's a real emergency then it's an emergency. It's important to know that radios (at least mine) will activate for emergencies transmitted on their receiving frequency, even if the PL does not match.
Just curious, what console are you using? Within the last couple years my family and friends have been building up a GMRS system made mostly of Motorolas and Vertexs.
