MEAD, Colo. -- An explosion was reported Friday morning at Boulder Scientific in Mead and one person was airlifted from the scene.

"Upon our arrival, there was a small fire and we were able to quickly extinguish it," said Steven Pischkey, of Mountain View Fire.

Pischkey said the person who was injured was burned and was an employee of the company. A Weld County spokeswoman said the man suffered severe burns and was airlifted to the University Hospital burn unit.

He was identified as Leslie Robertson of Loveland, Colo.

He said there was no chemical release into the air as a result of the explosion.

The damage was limited to one building, but the plant shut down operations as precaution.

The incident was called in at 6:59 a.m., Pischkey said.

Boulder Scientific is a chemical manufacturing company and employs about 100 people.

Three people were injured in an explosion at the same plant last year.
