• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Plenty of places on E-bay that will sell you a small amount of bright white or blue LED's with a dropping resistor and pigtails to wire in place of a bulb. Couple of bucks will buy you 10 or a dozen in 5mm size that will fit the original grain of wheat bulb grommet in many radios for panel lighting. Search out bright white LED's or check out some of the e-bay CB/radio stores.

Radio Shack used to have replacement 12v bulbs with flying leads and LEDs if they have not gone completely down the toilet yet.

Good luck finding any parts at RS even if the website's local store stock finder says so. I have 3 within driving distance. Two have parts drawers that look like they haven't been stocked in ages, the other doesn't even have the drawers. When I worked for them during college, we had a standard stock forcefeed that all stores were required to stock the catalog with very few exceptions. I guess that doesn't apply nowadays. It's no longer worth the bother going there. The remaining drones are clueless unless it's about pusing a battery sale or phone contract. Going there is an entire waste of time and you probably will have your bulb/led from an e-bay vendor in the mail before you manage to find anything around town wasting a tank of gas in the process. That's the reality.

And unfortunate... I used to get almost all of my parts from them when I was studying electrical engineering.
They lost their way.. and it may be too late.
Their core market used to be the hobbyist/student/engineer.

As far as the lamp.... use the old grommet unless it's damaged beyond use.
A LED with a current limiting resistor works too but your going to have issue with the lens on the LED and getting the light more or less uniform.

If you go with another incandescent lamp make sure it's not too bright and that it does not get too hot.
I have seen lots of meters ruined because the lamp got too hot and discolored the meter.
LED would be a superior choice if you can get the lighting right.

Thank's for the reply's, as for RS, I even hate to go in their stores since staff doesn't have any interest @ all unless a phone sale is iminent.
I in no way would want to jepordize ruining the meter from the wrong size bulb by heaat or otherwise. As for E-Bay, when I search for the ORIGINAL BULB, all I see is a hand full of bulb's with pigtails in different colors. I sure hope there is a supplier out there that has the correct bulb, I just cannot find out who?

Use a LED. Less heat, ~10% of the power consumption of an incandescent lamp, and much longer service life. Just make sure you have the correct resistor in series.

Superbrightleds dot com was one site I used to replace many of my incandescent bulbs with LED versions. All Electronics has many in their catalog. The dash of several of my vehicles and electronic test equipment meters are LED's from these two sources.
If you used to watch the Stargate SG1 show, they bought used test equipment and placed blue LED's in the meter movements to make them look modern as background props. I used plain white and the lowest output models on my meter movements. On some they were still too bright so I used sandpaper to diffuse the plastic over the LED element, this worked well for me.

All is well, Redman had the bulb/wire, Home Depot had the 3/32 shrink wrap tubing and I got a fresh lamp in the meter now. Such a easy task, 30 minutes approxmately. Thanks to those who replied.
