Yaesu: Microphone setup

I just purchased a Yeasu M1 Reference microphone for my 991a and was wondering where I should keep my mic gain on the radio itself.
I have the microphone set all the way to the right and the mic gain at 40 on the radio is that too high? I use headphones it sounds good to me but I dont want to cause distortion and can I still use the processor? And if so what is a good setting for that? Thank you all this is my first HF rig 73

Best way to check is to get on the air with a few friends who have met you in person, and tweak it to sound like you based on their input.

Thank you I will try that there are a few local guys on 144.200,I did try a kiwi sdr receiver about 30 miles away but no luck hearing myself no one here close has a one.
