I don't know the specifics on type acceptance in Canada, if that's even a thing up there. Generally speaking, it is NOT illegal to monitor those frequencies. So assuming the type acceptance (or equivalent) is not violated by doing the modification, you should be good to go. That's between you and Canada.
But as I mentioned, the bigger issue is that most of the traffic on those frequencies is SSB. You catch AM every now and again (especially the frequencies below Channel 1), but for the most part, it is SSB. But heck, I'm all for modifying equipment, personally, as long as you aren't using it illegally. If you want to monitor, I say knock yourself out, as long as your government agrees.
