So what is the best place to go MilAir spotting and scanning in the San Antonio area?

My understanding is that there is Lackland, Kelly, Randolph and Brooks. Which base is going to be the most active/interesting? And what kind of planes fly out of each.

I had thought that Kelly was closed, but after some web searches, I'm not sure.

Brooks is as good as closed, but they haven't had a flying mission for years anyway.

Lackland AFB has AFRES C-5 and TX ANG F-16 missions flying out of Kelly Field.

Kelly AFB is closed, now known as Kelly USA, and shares Kelly Field with Lackland. Kelly USA performs contracted maintenance work for C-17, KC-10, KC-135, maybe more. Plus there's plenty of transient activity.

Randolph has T-6, T-38, and more (I don't live in that flight path).

I don't monitor aircraft comms, but I believe the database has what you may be interested in.

Interesting as I'm down in S.A from time to time. Could set a bank in the Pro96 to these freqs if I had them....

Damned shame about Kelly Closing, as we had close contacts there but it's what is...

Lackland is promising for us.

I just worked a local gig this spring at DISA at Kelly USA. IMHO they have a lot of air traffic, mostly F16's, planes in the air daily when I was there. It was busier than I remember 'afore.
