I'm in northeast Iowa, almost due north of Waterloo. Is there any area that is going to be in range for me to listen in on? I would imagine I can hear Waterloo and Mason City, but is Volk and Hardwood going to be in range? Is there another area I should be trying to listen to? Is there a national frequency that is faily active that I could hit? I have a portable scanner with an external antennae on my truck, but nothing in the house. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

I would say that your Mobile rig should pick up the Volk moa area and the low/high level training routes close to you, if your not in a valley while trying to monitor. Not knowing what kind of scanner ant you have on your vehicle I'm just guessing here.Try to get as high as possible.
You should also be able to here Waterloo,Mason city, Minneapolis Center.

As i write this im hearing
348.300am Unknown Volk area
228.900 Norad
316.900 Ia air tac
138.350 air to air
Here are a few links to help you get started

Eastern Iowa Milcom - The RadioReference Wiki

Minneapolis (ZMP) Air Route Traffic Control Center (ARTCC) Scanner Frequencies and Radio Frequency Reference

Hope this helps and please post what you hear.

Thanks a bunch for the help. We'll see what we can get. I got a window mount external and I'm not sure how much its doing. Heard conflicting reports so mounted it over the tint and in between the window defrost coils. We'll see. But yes, I'll try the ones that you mentioned because I do end up over by Volk and Hardwood every once in a while. Also, Hardwood is having an open house at the range the second weekend in Sept. B-1, B-2, F-16s A-10s and others are expected to make appearances and bomb runs. Also found these on a website that a guy posted. May be old news, but what the heck.

Hi,

This is great. I'm new to the scanners and was wondering if these are analog or digital frequencies?

Thanks for your help.
Tim

All are analog and am mode, you will however need a scanner that picks up the military air band 200-400 MHz.

Happy scanning

AF-1 heading to Iowa

Wish I had a scanner that picked up 200-400. Would have been quite interesting with all of the air traffic that flew around my home town...where President Obama stayed. Jets were heard overhead all night long.
