I thought the same. Never in the service, but I do work in nuclear.

Yeah, it does. Could be harmless all the way to really nasty stuff. The nasty stuff requires stout shielding, and that weighs a lot.

A more likely possibility is a In-Flight Blade Inspection System (IBIS) on the rotary wings (props) with Strontium-90. I do not know if that aircraft has those, but some military ones do. Typically this would involve several 100uC level sources.

Not at all in my experience. An example being that death tolls from earthquakes and floods are usually found to be about much higher than initially reported.
