Hey guys , I have been a scanner nut for a long time now , but when melbourne police changed over to the new mmr system I havent been doing much with it, I was just wondering if there are any scanners on the market that are capable of picking up the melbourne police on their new system , any help would be awesome

Hi,
Sorry but NO, the Melbourne Police are on the new MMR and are 100% secure.
There is NO WAY you can scan them any more.

Well actually Paul,

You can "scan" them just fine- follow their talkgroups from site to site and see new one's pop up on the network ( I am forever locking them out as they appear) but you cannot hear a word they say- just a horrible underwater gargling noise thanks to the encryption scheme employed by ALL the Victoria Police talkgroups.
To my understanding- the encryption cannot be accidentally switched off by the officer using the radio- it is permanently on.

So the police in metro Melbourne can be seen but not heard so to speak!

People say its always 100% Ecrypted, Me and a few other people i know have heard unecrypted transmissions over the last few months but recently havent heard any in the last week, It is possable for them to turn it off and it does happen to dont give your hopes up

Problem is though guys,

I am not prepared to listen to hours of garbled gobbeldy gook to hear one or two transmissions in the clear. When the Mornington Peninsula districts were having problems with coverage (late 2006) they had a seperate talkgroup simulcast in the clear for a few hours a day- but the techs or D24 would switch it off when not being used for site tests.

In the long run- encryption is here to stay- like it or not!

BTW- Love to know if the arrest rate/fines have gone up due to a secure radio network!
