Does anyone know of areas that still use MODAT on their police or fire frequencies? This page
http://www.kb9ukd.com/digital/ has a sample of what it sounds like. I have been all over Ohio
and West Virginia and have never heard it in use. I think it sounds kind of neat.

Thanks for your replies

I love the MDC/Modat (if that's what it is) on your 39.980 clip. Can't get much more annoying than that.

I actually was running MODAT on my fire portable for a while, but it got to the point that it was annoying me too much, so I went back to MDC that the dispatch center could actually read.

If you never heard the data burst Metro Nashville PD used on the VHF system then you really missed out, I swear that thing used to last 2 seconds at the end of every transmission.

Yup, LAPD in CA uses it on all thier radios, gets kinda annoying after a while............

Uh, no they don't. They've been ASTRO for almost a decade now. I have been watching "LAPD Life on the beat" on the FOX reality network. Modat heaven...

Hamsexy types are the main users these days.

You wanna talk about annoying? My agency just got new /\/\ mobiles in the cars, and a couple guys have figured out how to send DTMF and QC tones across the air. some joker even switched over to our fireside and dropped the correct tone combination for the vollie's pagers  I spent the next 15mins on the phone explaining to 15-20 Firefighters that no, we didn't page them!

I know the MT500 with a MODAT back will do it. LAPD used Motorola MX-350's with modat in them. I'm not sure which mobiles will do it though.

So:
MT500 w/modat module
MX-350
Astro Saber
XTS3000
XTS3500

MODAT is an analog only signal protacol. When LAPD switched to IMBE, MODAT went by-by.
