Hi all, I accidentally hit the modulation key when locked onto a frequency. What is it on by default, is it just on auto by default?

I'm hoping I didn't mess anything up.

As long as you still hear the frequency without distortion it’s probably ok. If you would like to know what distortion might sound like, make a deliberate Incorrect modulation change to a frequency and listen to the results. When done, put the setting back where you found it, or as stated by others “Auto. There are a few modulation choices which means you would experience differing forms of distortion from loss of volume to scratchy audio or no audio.

I guess it's been okay so far from what I can tell anyway so I guess I will see.

When in doubt, “Auto” will work most of the time. But I’m not up on how the scanner determines which mode to choose if “Auto” is chosen. It could be by band plan. Ex: The commercial aviation band is AM. The military has followed suite and also uses AM for the military air band. But there are exceptions. Sometimes the military will use FM within the military air band. If the scanner simply chooses a mode by what band the frequency resides in you might get a wrong mode. But listening to the comms should tell you something is amiss... and nudge you to try another mode.
