monitoring R.R. frequencies

question about listening to R.R. freqs.
will I be able to hear a station without using the NXDN key if it is required?
what is the audio quality with / without NXDN Key

If the mode is listed as NXDN then you will need the update. If it says FM or FMN then you are good to go. At least around here, I haven't noticed any railroad NXDN.

still wondering about the audio with/without NXDN key. will signal still be heard, will it be readable, or will the station just be silent

Without the NXDN key all you will hear is the raw data stream... no voice will be decoded.

Their encoded then decoded voices make them sound like they have cotton balls stuffed in their mouths! :ROFLMAO:
