GAITHERSBURG, Md. -- A hazardous materials team from the Montgomery County Fire and Rescue Department is trying to determine the source of an irritating chemical that's prompted the evacuation of a school.
Students and staff were cleared from Gaithersburg High School just before noon on Friday after several people complained of throat and eye irritations near the building's administrative offices in the 300 block of South Frederick Avenue.
Montgomery Fire spokesman Pete Piringer said investigators believe the irritant was pepper spray. He said a few students who have complained of discomfort could be transported to area hospitals for precautionary observation.

Most of Gaithersburg High School's students have been relocated to a nearby recreation center or placed aboard buses to get them into warmer surroundings.
The incident remains under investigation.
