yeah, narrow banding does not even apply to 800 mhz and from teh sound of it that is what they have.

I love the end of this article....

"Hoeffel also directed the staff to begin exploring cost sharing with municipalities for the upgrade, which will include the purchase of portable radios for all police officers, firefighters, emergency medical personnel and pubic safety officials, construction of another 10 radio towers and new equipment and software to run the new system."

Pretty much says it all....

I REMBER WHEN COUNTY FIRST SWITCHED TO 800 THEY COULDNT GET RIGHT THEN AN IT TOOK FOREVER TO GET THINGS UP AN RUNNING~!!*()$#$@!! AN I HOPE THEY GET RIGHT THIS TIME!! THE FIRST OR SECOND TIME!! THE 800 BLOWES GOATS IN MY PART OF TWP!! I ALWAYS HEAR MY TWP PD TO COUNTY IN MY PART OF TWP CANT HERE U IN A THAT CERTIAN SECTION OF TWP THAT IS BAD FOR RECIVING COUNTY!! AN THE kicker is that countys towers are only 1 ridge away!! then elevation drops off abruptly in section of twp!! I hope they get it right this time!! thats why my twp fire an police have vhf radios for this type of thing!! an what is the sense of rebanding!! when all must be switched to narrow band anyway!!! wtf!!!!

Whoa easy there fella... I understand your frustration but you have to take a few things into consideration. Just because they are hiring a "consulting firm" does not mean that this will actually happen since the "firm" may even turn around an say "with this upgrade or that upgrade" to the current system all will be well (since narrowbanding is below 800 anyway). Believe it or not the County is working on ensuring 800mhz coverage in the spotty areas since they are taking on more depts that have coverage issues (soon to be Montgomery Twp for example). If I may also ask to whom did you speak to that told you "your township" would be switching to LPPD dispatch if this upgrade were to occur? I only ask because I work for LPPD and as you know we are on the county 800mhz and CAD systems just like everybody else (except LMPD and Montgomery for now) and if that goes bye bye then we need to upgrade to whatever the boys in the suits tell us to hence switching to LPPD to gain better coverage would make no sense, don't get me wrong I'd love the job security and the better call volume but to do what your claiming would require a major expense. For example if "your township" and LPT decide to ditch the county radio system all together (highly doubtful) then "your township" would need to purchase and/or program existing radios that would operate on LPPD's conventional freqs which currently act as our back up system and thats just for starters. Just some food for thought.

The thing to keep in mind is that most of the field radios, portable and mobile, that are being used right now are 700mhz compatible. So the cost to most field units would be minimal.
