I hear EMS units being assigned to different "Post" numbers. What do these mean?

Texas EMS Post

It is a set location for a EMS unit to go ,when other EMS units are on a call to get better coverage of their City,District,or what ever the service area is.Example EMS Unit 2 post 6. Post 6 could be a street,Building, any kind of landmark. The EMS Units have a list of where these Post are.Hope this helps...

One EMS company I worked for did this. We had 5 ambulances and when we started getting low everyone had to move to a post. Like Rescue4NFD said, it allows for better coverage for the area. Our posts were on the major roads that went through the area so we could get everywhere faster. You will usually hear the system called System Status Management. Its a big fancy name for moving peopele around.

MCHD Posts....

I can provide you a list of posts, etc, but it is all about to change on January 22nd. They will still be doing posting, but using a very different system.

Example:

M90 is in Porter. M52 is in Splendora.

M90 catches a call, M52 will be moved to Post 90 to cover because there is a statistically greater chance of the next call being in Porter, and not in Splendora.

MCHD staffs 14 - 24 hour ambulances and 3 peak hour ambulances. If the system reaches "Level 6" or lower (6 ambulances left not on calls) Then every available ambulance is sent to a post to better cover the county.

Interesting...so what do these "posts" look like? Are they just parking spaces or actual stations?

Every place is different when it comes to where posts are actually at. The place I worked at when we only had 2 ambulances we posted in the parking lot of two different gas stations. When we got to where we only had 1 unit, we parked in the parking lot of the one of the hosptials. It was the central part of the area we covered.

Posting

Some of the Posts are fire stations, some are street corner gas stations, one is a Taco Cabana!!! It all depends... They are actually built in the cad as street intersections. The new posting plan is based off of their new mapping system called MARVLS (pronounced: marvolus) . It uses historical CAD data and combines it with the GPS data from the trucks and keeps track of how long it takes a unit to go from point A to point B at any given time on any given day.

Example.

It knows that it takes M90 4min 22 sec to make it from their station to Loop 494 and FM 1485 at 2am on the second saturday of the month, however it takes them 8min 45 sec to get to the same location at 3pm on a friday because of school traffic (GPS monitored speed via historical data.) SO.... Every ambulance has what they call an "ameba" surrounding it in green yellow and red. As the ambulance moves, the "ameba" morphes and changes shape to represent what geographic locations the unit can cover based off of historical data and street level routing. Green = 6 min, Yellow= 8, red i think is 10. The Idea is to try to cover the greatest % of land with the available resources.

On top of all of this... MARVLS keeps track of calls. It is able to give statistical predictions on where the next 911 call will come from. Now we all know that you cannot predict when emergencies will occur, but again it uses historical data to tell me that there is a 75% chance that on the second tuesday of the month between 6 and 7 pm there will be a 911 call in Willis....

The Idea is to lower responce times and reduce the amount of current posting. There are some ambulances that are less than 6 months old with over 60K miles on them.....
