Morning Start Hotshots

Good afternoon everyone

I had a quick question. Does anyone know where the BIA Morning Star Hotshots wne too? Did they disban.........????? They werent on the WildCAD system for the 2007 season, and still havent poped back up. Just curious

I didn't notice whether or not they were listed in 2007, but they are definately not listed now. I found a 2004 article on them by doing a Google search and it mentioned the existence of 11 BIA hotshot crews. Looking at the current list I see there are only 9 now and Morning Star is one of those 2 not listed anymore.

It is very expensive and difficult to maintain a hotshot crew. I think 7 of the positions have to be career appointments and at least two of them are permanent full time. Then the crew must have at least 80% of its members with more than one year of fire experience. I think it must be difficult for the BIA to maintain this level of experience unless there are large reservations to draw members from. The southwestern area has the most BIA crews as there are a lot of large reservations, with a good fire workload.
