Most interesting, intense, or strangest thing you've ever heard over your scanner?

I thought it would be nice to have a forum where us Washingtonian-scanner-listeners could share stuff we've heard over our scanners in the past. I bet some over you guys have heard really weird stuff :)

I really wasn't thinking anything specific; just any story you got that you think others would enjoy hearing. I hope this will be a fun forum. Thanx for participating!

i'll start . . .

I was thinking that the police would be pretty busy on New Years day, especially in the early morning. I went to bed around 2:00 AM with my scanner in hand (I listen to the scanner to fall asleep, not that it's boring but I’m just one of those people that need noise to go to bed). I think I came across some kind of Seattle pd talk group in charge of clearing clubs and crowd control, because I wasn't hearing any calls going out and there only officers reporting things to dispatch. "A black male just showed me his gun" one officer who was clearing a bar says. He drove away in a black Mercedes and the police caught up with him a few blocks away. The air was closed, but it was reported code 4. But before this incident was even cleared, "shots fired" another police officer yells out. Some guys in a Lincoln town car shot up a truck near where the police officer was standing. They were also caught a few blocks away under the same conditions (code 4). And now while the talk group was still bussing about that, yet another police officer yells out "shots fired . . . 8 shots fired. I’m in an ally (I forget the street name). I’ve got one down. Bullet to the head and chest . . . shooter has a gray hoody on". He called out for EMS and asked if there was a detective available. I was amazed with how calm he was under the circumstances. They got the guy and recovered the weapon. This all happened in probably less than 15 minutes and I was really impressed with the way the Seattle PD handled it. And I was really amazed by how all this things were witnessed in front of officers; not reported by callers. I reflected: "for some, the new year is the end"
It made me thankful to be alive and have the protection of law enforcement.

Many years ago (1960s) at an east coast city fire. There was a working fire in a 3-story frame dwelling. After the fire was knocked down, there was an occupant in the 2nd floor they wanted to remove. (he was not injured). I heard this, something you will never hear in today's politically correct environment.
The District Chief radioed to his FAO (Fire Alarm Office), "This is Chief _____. Send the rescue over here. We've got a human Hippopotamus on the second floor."

hahaha, that's great. i've only heard police joke around once over the radio in my aprox 1 year of really listening to the scanner. they were talking about their pay and making "big bucks" (jk ofcourse). but that's funny, "a human hippopotamus" lol

This wasn't here. It was in Huntsiville Texas.. many years ago. I guess the sheriff department had a unit waiting for a plane to land. Over the radio "De plane boss de plane!". This was during the days of the t.v series "Fantasy Island" .. So it really cracked me up .

I am just visiting this forum....but years ago my first shocking conversation was picking up a cell phone converations (back when the phones were analog and images would appear on your scanner) and some gang banger was on the phone bragging about hitting some other gang member with a baseball bat in the head. I still dont know if it was real, or he was just saying that to impress his friend...

A couple years ago I monitored a called here in Burbank, CA...with a unit asking for an additional unit on a traffic stop at a hotel. A couple minutes later, I heard this gasping voice saying...."Shots fired.....Officer down"....... I was in the middle of making stir fry for dinner, and thought I misheard.....the dispatcher started sending units to the hotel....then again, weak and out of breath voice "Shots fired.....Officer down" The dispatcher responded that units were entroute. well, I turned on another scanner, and tuned in the fire dispatch....and heard them dispatching 2 then 3 rescue ambulances....then hearing a motorcycle officer going down on slick streets responding, so 4 ambulances. Over the next two hours, nearly 100 units rolling code 3 arrived into the city from LAPD, and other adjoining police departments in hopes that a suspect was contained inside a very loose perimeter, so mutual aid channels were hopping with all kinds of confusion.

Anyway, the next two weeks were hopping with raids with SWAT teams and the funeral.....but I will never forget that officer help voice.

On the local level. I was dining out for lunch the day of the "Jewish federation center" shooting's. .I was telling the person with me what I'd just heard. A young woman that worked there wanted to know what I was hearing as she was Jewish. .I started to let her listen in but there were other people there and it was not something everyone needed to hear. I also heard activity regarding the "Rave" this was after the fact tho when detectives and such were still on the scene. I wasn't clear on what was going on until the noon news.

Here on Bainbridge island there was an accident in which a car went plowing into the mall in downtown Winslow. Not only did I hear that call, I got pictures. Most recently a small kitchen fire right next door to our complex. More pix from that too.

From the East Coast - Spiking a Semi

I live on the Georgia-South Carolina Border - Last night I followed a Crazy 30 minute, Two State chase of a Trucker.

http://chronicle.augusta.com/stories/011607/met_112653.shtml

Our Deputies chased the driver (Tractor only - no trailer) into the next County, then he reversed and returned to our county, then jumped onto I-20 and went into South Carolina.

Once the South Carolina Police picked up the chase, our Deputies dropped off and returned to Georgia - but the goofball turned around and came charging back into Georgia!

About three miles in, he got zapped with a spike strip that took out his right front tire, and for the next five miles he was spraying sparks. The last 5 minutes of the chase was at 30 MPH.

Duuuuhhh?

One night I was listening in Yakima while delivering pizzas, I actually heard a officer get shot and the manhunt that followed. The officer survived thanks to his vest. I listen while I drive truck and hear accidents all the time.
