The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Good day folks~
I just recieved the MTX/MTSX CPS/RSS from Motorola yesterday. It was like Christmas in August! Now i'm faced with actually using it! :) I don't have a 3.5" floppy drive on my desktop computers so i'm buying an external unit to get started.

Does anyone have a programming manual for the MTX/MTSX radios in a pdf or other format that they would be willing to share? I don't want to 'brick' my radio by screwing anything up. Any tips would be appreciated as well. Thanks in advance for any help that you can provide!

Programming Issue MT2000

I'm trying to install the MTX software from the supplied 3.5" disk and i am getting an error every time i try...

The MTSX RSS requires a minimum of 3.0 MB of extended memory in order to run.

Your PC has 0 bytes

I'm fairly positive that both in RAM and available hard drive space i have well in excess of 3 MBs. Can anyone offer any assistance please? I can't register over at Batlabs so i've turned here for help. Thanks in advance.

MTSX is a DOS based RSS program and should not be run or set up in Windows. You'll have to be in DOS mode to install it - That means Windows should NOT be running at all.

Are you trying to load CPS (Windows based software) or RSS? I believe from your second post that you have RSS, especially since you have 3.5" disks (CPS usually comes on a CD). RSS is a DOS based platform only. Don't install it in a Windows system. DOS 6.22 would be prefered. I also suggest a slower PC as current P4 processor maybe too fast for the serial ports and software to communicate.

Hope this helps you.

CPS does not come from Motorola on Floppy Disks. Plus, MTSX was never released in CPS - It's only RSS.

Oh ****

Thank you to everyone for your quick and knowledgeable replies. I did figure out the DOS thing and have succesfully booted directly to DOS using a DOS disk. It took some time but i got that far.

The disk that i have that was shipped from Motorola is a 3.5" disk that does say MTSX version R06.08.00. My understanding is that both the MT & MTS2000 radios were programmed with RSS to a point but the MTS2000 were subsequently upgraded to CPS programming. I have that CDROM as well, they were shipped as a pair under Moto part number RVN4097U.

I have come into another problem. I editted the codeplug data with the frequencies and PL/DPL tones that i wanted but as i tried to load them into the unit i got a warning that stated
CHECKSUM ERROR
The radio also displays
ERROR 01/82

While doing this it wouldn't allow reading or writing to the radio and turning it on only brought up the same screen.

Oddly after recycling the radio and trying again the radio now gives me a different error [ERROR 01/02]. At least now the previous programming is visible and audible on the radio but i can't read or write the codeplug data still.

Does anyone here have any insights into what's happening, why it's happening and possible avenues of repair? I'm willing to go a moto tech if i have to but i'd like to explore other avenues first. The radio was purchased via ebay.

If it's helpful:
Codeplug: 000F
Radio Software Version: 01.42
Last Programmed: 0708021928
Model: H01KDH9AA7AN
Serial No: 355AUL1406

Thanks again in advance for any help!

You need to ask on Batlabs.

Hopefully, you didn't try to write to the radio while Windows was running. You MUST use that software while in PURE DOS.

I'm not able to get a log on to batlabs...they haven't been allowing new subscribers for some time now. I was in the 'pure' DOS mode as i attempted both reading and writing of the unit.

Thanks Rescue161 for your quick response.

The codeplug in the radio is corrupt, both Error 01/02 and 01/82 mean that the external portion (the portion of the codeplug that contains channel, PL/DPL, scan lists, zone information, etc) is corrupt.

Try re-writing the codeplug if it is available. And if the CPS package you ordered came with the CPS CD I recommend using that instead of the MTSX RSS software. And I would assume, that if your using the RSS, on a current computer, the computer is running too fast for the RSS to be able to send data correctly to the radio.

If the codeplug is corrupt can i reprogram the radio or is it stuck in it's current configuration. I'm working on getting an older computer with a slower procesor on e-bay or something but is it worth it for this radio?

Can i use the MTSX CPS on an MT2000? My understanding is that the CPS was for MTS200s only. Thanks again for all of the help.

No, you can't use MTS2000 CPS on an MT2000. You need to be running true DOS on an older computer. Or, you need to send it to someone who knows what they are doing.

Sorry, I misread the title, thought you were talking about an MTS. Either way the error messages still stick, just that your stuck with the DOS based RSS. Per what ATF1224 said, you need to get the RSS running on a slower machine.

Well I may be new here, But any computer that has windows on it will have problems with the RSS,(this is what I have found) I use an old 486 with NOTHING but DOS and RSS.

Now here my question(I think I know the answer all ready) How do I get my radio to work with OLDER software, it was read and codeplug changed by NEWER software then what I currently own ?

(answer) buy newer or updated software
Right

Right

That's also not necessarily true either. I use a Dell Latitude CPi PII with Windows 98 to program radios, but I use the "Restart in MS-DOS" mode on the shut down screen to enter pure DOS. Running the RSS in a DOS box under Windows will not work and you could brick the radio. A PII is about the fastest I would use for an RSS work, though. Most RSS packages of later versions are pentium-compatible now. Try finding MTSX Version 06.07.00, which is what the vast majority of MT2000's i've seen are programmed with.

Even "Restarting in DOS mode" can give problems as well because Windows is still actually doing "things" in the background. This means com ports could be used by other parameters.

If you must have Windows on an HD, then the best way is to use a Startup Disk and reboot the computer into pure DOS that way. Then, you are guaranteed that the com ports will not be occupied by some Windows task.

I use a Windows 2000 OS and do this very thing to program radios and use other DOS related programs without a hitch.

I am using a start-up disk to get into DOS. I'll check into my processor on the unit. It's so odd...i was able to read the radio just fine. It's writing back that's been proven difficult.

I have the manual for the MTSX RSS, service manual for the MT2000 radio and the regular operation manual all in PDF if you are interested.
