If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hello all,
I recently put an external speaker on my Moto CDM1250. I would like to put the speaker on the headliner, between the two sun visors. I've seen this done in police cars, but I'm wondering if anyone has any experience doing this, and if so how to go about doing it without damaging the headliner.

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks :)

There are two options I'd try, if I was going to do this:

1. see if there are any screws holding the sun visor clips. If there are, you can probably fabricate a bracket that will span between those two screws and support the speaker. The full sized Motorola speakers are a bit heavy, so you'd need to design it well, lest it fall down at an awkward moment.

2. you could fabricate a sheet of aluminum to attach to the speaker bracket and hook up and over the front edge of the headliner. If there is any trim, you might be able to use that as part of the support.

There are likely some other ideas out there that will work, but those are the two that came to my mind.

For off the shelf stuff, Motorola has a speaker bracket, actually it is a metal tab attached to the speaker that slides into a small metal bracket. The metal bracket could be attached to the roof in one of the above ways, or by screwing through the headliner,(which I know you don't want to do), and sliding the tab into the bracket attached to the overhead.

I've installed them between the visors in type III ambulances before, but it's easier to get above the headliner on those.

How did you do that? Any pictures by chance?

Thanks everyone for the replies!

No pics but the headliners are not stock Ford or chevy headliners. They are a modular conversion kits which allows for emergency vehicle wiring. They are designed for doing other mounting options.
What kind of vehicle are you wanting to do this with?

I'm trying to do this with a 2007 Crown Vic.

I see, you might look at pics of other crown vic CVP's because some of them have the day/ night dome light mounted up there, allowing access for speaker wiring.
I did post this pic from a site that I got ideas from.

What about mounting the speaker on the back of the center console? I've done that where other options weren't as viable. Messing with the headliner can lead to headaches if you break the backing or things just don't line back up upon reinstall. I shy away from opening the headliner unless it's a purpose built modular headliner made for emergency vehicles. They're built to allow work like this to be done on them.
