• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

What you describe sounds exactly like an inhibited radio to me! Fixing it is no simple task.

If you got it off of eBay or somewhere else, I'd get my money back.

I can get the radio to get into a flashzap bootloader screen
It also says rs-232 115.2Kbps ready to download
I get to this screen by pressing the orange button and the PTT button while turning it on

I'm curious, you say it was working and now it is not?

Was this radio perhaps programmed on some trunking system? If so, congrats, you made a brick!

yep, it's been zapped by the trunking controller. Good luck getting it un-inhibited, As Mancow mentioned about the Depot software which was never meant to be released to the public and is property of mother M so it's a touchy situation and possibly a violation of this websites position on talking about that kind of software. Another option is to send it to the Depot but you need a real good reason for them to remove the inhibit flag. It sucks that it's a brick. The 5000's are in my opinion great radios.

if it was legitimately programmed, should be no problem for the system manager to re-enable it.

if someone has been trying to bootleg on some government radio system and they popped it, have fun getting it turned back on.

Just because the serial # is clean doesn't mean that it won't get inhibited.
In some states illegal programming onto a TRS is an offense that could get you arrested, so calling the dispatch center cold get you a visit by local LE and a trip downtown in shiny bracelets.

For your info ks4vt it was not illegally programmed it came the local fire dept in some city that happens to be in the USA

These guys are trying to help you understand the entire situation with your radio. There are aspects to TRS systems that are little known but very dangerous. You need all the info you can get to resolve the problem in a satisfactory manner. Understanding the problems and pitfalls is critical.

Columbus would NEVER sell the radio to anyone still programmed, so your best bet is to figure out WHERE the radio came from before you find yourself charged with a felony for receipt of stolen property.

I purchased an Astro Spectra Plus on ebay once that was programmed to the MARCS system. I guess some agencies don't bother clearing the data.

The City of Columbus radio administrator is the only one likely to know anything, or whomever is managing syswatch on their system. That is the person you need to talk to. Be forewarned. Unless you are absolutely certain as to the heritage of this radio, and are absolutely certain that this is a legit sale from them, you run the risk of losing the radio and your freedom if you contact this person, as they ARE the person who bricked your radio.

If they legitimately sold it, then they should gladly take it in, unbrick it and unprogram it from their system. Leaving it active on a PS TRS is simply stupid. If it is missing and came up in the DB as missing/stolen, then they certainly WON'T unbrick it, and you will be answering to LE with some pointed questions at the very least.

I find it extremely unlikely that a current (but older) radio would be surplused unless there is some major upgrade going on, in which case there should be many more on the market at this point.

You hit it right on the nail. I've gotten surplus radios. All they have in them is EOD car to car. One simplex freq usually. Everything is almost reset to default. Now one thing is it may of not of came from Columbus fire. It could of came from township in which they buy thier own radios and have them programmed by the admin. An example is HAM twp. They buy thier own radios sometimes and send them to get programmed. The older ones can be kept or get sold. They should be wiped. But if its sold not with the admins knowing then it can slip and still be programmed. Most things are cleared by admins before sale. There's a chance that this one could be one or it could a "special" radio that some screwed with.

It could have fallen off the tailboard of a Type 1 too, at this point there is no way to know. Best to do some more investigating. This is why anyone who purchases a used radio with trunking capability should do two things: know the provenance, and never turn the radio on with an antenna on it, until you have checked the programming.

Well if this is fact true, then you should of explained that in the FIRST place....We can't read your freakin mind.
If it isn't, good luck in getting it re-enabled. I inhibit radios weekly and refuse to turn them back on unless I get to see the radio in person and the users credentials.
