Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hello

I'm currently an HT1250 user and I love the benefits of having my own portable in the public safety realm. Im interested in updating to a XTS 2500 as after the narrowbanding I see we are eventaully going to be going digital. but I'm concerned as to the situation with the CPS software. I would rather not pay $400 Plus dollars for a CPS to program only one radio.

Can you program the button selections, scan groups, and all personalities without the use of the CPS.

Also if I do purchase a 2500 do I have to use the new R17xx software or can I use the more available R14xx?

Any insight would be helpful. Thanks!

Some XTS2500 radios have the Front Panel Programming (FPP) enabled as evidenced by option Q52 & Q53 included in the FLASHcode. This allows you to enter Frequency, Squelch, Mode and Label/Name for each channel.

More advanced functions such as programming buttons, scan list assignments, etc require the use of the Customer Programming Software (CPS) and programming cable.

The software is Motorola part number RVN4181 and the cable is RKN4105. You can order by calling 800-814-0601. Costs are $265 and $237 respectively.

The latest software version is R18.00.02. You can use any version of software to program a XTS2500 as long as the version is equal to or greater than the version it was last programmed with. Otherwise, you'll get an error when you try to read the radio.

I'm sure there are more details that others will add...

No, you will require the CPS to program basically everything to do with the radio.

You will have to use the CPS version the radio was last programmed with or greater. If it's been programmed with anything higher than R14, you cannot use R14. The latest ASTRO25 software is actually R18.

There is a rollback utility over at p25.ca which will allow you to roll the codeplug back to an earlier version. This could possibly allow you to use R14. YMMV.

If they also go to a trunked system, then you won't be able to program any trunking parameters from the keypad.
