I have a motorola Desk microphone i believe the model is VMN1031A that i would like to wire ( or adapt for use on my Kenwood TM-V71A Dual Bander. Is this possible or am i just tossing my time into the wind?

You CAN hook up a motorola desk mic to a kenwood radio but here are the differences.

The motorola mic needs a DC voltage on the mic high line to run a preamplifier circuit. Without this voltage the mic will put out nada. The kenwood radio does not provide this "bias voltage" on the mic line. You can inject the voltage on the mic line using a resistor/capacitor combination.

Also, since the motorola mic has a preamp, it will output over 100 mV to the radio. The kenwood's dynamic mic only applies 10 to 20 mV to the radio. Motorola mics will really sound LOUD, to the point of distortion and room acoustics that will make a lousy signal. Desk mics though have a volume control that could be turned down until the audio is sounding nice and clean.

ok here's the point i am at. I can get the microphone to Key, then only thing i cannot get it do do is output Audio. now with the Kenwood Tm-V71A i know on the mic it does output 8v dc on pin 2 of the RJ-45 connector i believe max current is 100mA Max. now i do know the pinout on the Kenwood for the PTT and Mic and MIC GND and Shield. but i am questionable on where to add the DC Voltage to the Motorola Desk Microphone so i am not Damaging the internals of the mic.

I hope that help, and any feedback is certainly welcome.

Thank you.

add the voltage to the Mic High line. 5-9v is all you need, the 8vdc/100mA should be fine. as stated above though, it will be loud as heck.

Thank you to each of you who replied.. i finally did get the Motorola Mic to work on my Rig.

I do realize how hot the audio would be through this microphone, but i would certainly like the ability to turn down the microphone. as the current situation i am in the origional microphone picks everything up in the background. and there are times where i have been chin wagging and it has picked up some colorful language.

I had gone through the settings in the radio and had set the mic sensitivity to low, but unfortunatly it still remained as potent as ever. So now at least i can turn down the desk mic and not have to worry about the mic picking up the neighbours language. :)

On the back of the mic is a small rectangle hole. Beyond the hole is the pot to set the mic level. I have yet to see a tweeker that will fit through this hole and turn the pot. You could ream the plastic out with a regular small screwdriver (when I'm in a hurry), or take the whole thing apart to get to it and keep the case pristine.
