• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hello. I'm brand new to scanning/radios. I recently came across a GM300, and I do know that it's actually a radio not a scanner. I'm hoping I can get some info here or point me in the right direction. From another site I saw that this particular one is programmed to recieve 136-162 MHz. I live in Ridgecrest, CA and routinely travel to Claremont, CA. I'm looking for any info on listening to CHP units along the 395, the 15, the 210, and the 14. I have no attachments so that would be my first step. I'm hoping I shouldn't have any problem getting an antenna or power cables. Oh! Another key point is that I want to run this in my vehicle I'm not sure if this unit is designed for mobile or home use. I don't want to make this post too long, so I'll cut it off here. Any help would be greatly appreciated, and if you need any more information, please let me know!

i don't know what they use in the areas you wish to scan, but look at your model number on the bottom/back of the radio. the model will be M33 or M43 if it is VHF(136-162). you can only program in a few channels, and this must be done via a computer. also the GM series will not go NB(unless it was a 12.5k only model originally), so it will be subject to new adjacent channel interference soon and will have low audio when the agencies go NB.

honestly, you either need a better radio or a real scanner.

Alright, it's an M33 model. I wasn't sure if 'd be able to use it or not, so the last post definitely helps. On to better questions. Any idea how much I might be able to get for the radio I have? And what's a good scanner to start with. I'm looking for one I can mount in a console. I have no problem mounting an antenna to the exterior of m car (I have an old crown vic so there's already a few antennas on there that might work) Also, does anyone have any idea what the radio I have now is good for?

You might post the whole model number. Its going to be between 50 and a 100 dollars depending on which logic board it has and the number of channels.

Your GM300, if it is a 136-162MHz split, will not be able to receive CHP as they are on a VHF Low Band system which is in the 42-50MHz split.

Thanks for all of the information! For what it's worth, the entire model # is: M33GMC20D1AA. So what would a good mobile based scanner be to start off with?

Here are a few PRO 197,PSR 600,PRO 2096, BCD996T.

These do analog and digital trunking. So if you are or ever drive down to the LA area they some digital frequencies on ICIS.

The Pro 197 you can mount in your car or use as a base scanner for home also. These are just some suggestions.

Wow, I'll be honest I didn't realize scanners were that expensive! Besides the scanner, is there any other equipment I'd need? antennas and the like? Or do these have built in antennas? any other pertinent information I should know about about for beginners scanning?

Well, I went to Radio Shack as they were closing today and picked up a Pro-197, or so I thought. When I got home it turns out that the person working there gave me the box the display model was in, so I have no scanner. Tried calling the store, but ti was closed. Hopefully I'll get this situated first thing tomorrow morning. Anyways, I purchased the scanner and the cord to link to the computer. My next step is going to be finding a good antenna for my vehicle, downloading a good program to actually program the scanner, and figuring out what stations I'm going to want to program. Any help with all of this would be greatly appreciated, again. Thanks for all of the help so far!

One more thing, and I'm sorry, I don't mean to keep making new posts on this thread without getting answers, I'm just pretty excited about getting things rolling. I was looking at different frequencies in the areas I'm interested in on the database, and I was wondering which ones I should be programming. Is there a difference between dispatch and mobile? What's the difference between dispatch and tactical? And what exactly are repeaters? I'm sure by now you've all definitely noticed I am brand new to this. So hopefully once I pic up the scanner tomorrow I'll have some good info and I can start programming and start asking questions about software, haha...
