• To anyone looking to acquire commercial radio programming software:

Please do not make requests for copies of radio programming software which is sold (or was sold) by the manufacturer for any monetary value. All requests will be deleted and a forum infraction issued. Making a request such as this is attempting to engage in software piracy and this forum cannot be involved or associated with this activity. The same goes for any private transaction via Private Message. Even if you attempt to engage in this activity in PM's we will still enforce the forum rules. Your PM's are not private and the administration has the right to read them if there's a hint to criminal activity.

If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

This is a large and very visible forum. We cannot jeopardize the ability to provide the RadioReference services by allowing this activity to occur. Please respect this.

Im a volunteer firefighter and my department don't provide raidio for cars and were on the marcs system that's what i need to know
No, MARCS is P25. The MCS series will not do P25.
You’ll need at the very least, an XTL series. And that’s considering you’ll be issued a subscriber ID and allowed onto the system.

...and you should get that thru the authorized contact for the MARCS system, when you get an authorized subscriber unit. Those usually come dept issued thru positional appointments, along with communications training and instruction on how to transmit on the system.

if the MCS in front of you is an M01J or M01K model, you could program in the appropriate VHF hi-band frequencies (RR DB shows 3) and use it as a glorified recieve-only pager. Might be a bit over kill.

For P25 trunked systems you always of course have to have the proper features in the radio.

The Astro, Astro25, and APX product lines are what will do P25.

Astro is old and obsolete. Examples would be the Astro Spectra mobile radios and Astro Saber portable radios.k

Astro 25 is previous generation, no longer sold, but still supported. That'd be XTL series mobile radios and XTS series portables.

Currrent generation is the APX series, which covers both mobile and portable radios.

Using any of them to monitor a trunked system without authorization is tricky and contains many hazards, and requires venturing into dark shadows where laws may be bent if not broken. It's also strictly for people who have prior experience with programming trunked radios and know how to avoid the inherent dangers.

Get a scanner. It's cheaper, easier, and safer.

Alternatively, you MAY be able to get permission from your system administrator to get your own radio and get it authorized on the system for very limited usage. This is not likely but you can ask if you want to.

XTL is essentially a no-go. MARCS has mandated radio authentication, and are no longer allowing XTS/XTL on the system unless it already has authentication. Most don’t.
