If you are having trouble legally obtaining software please state so. We do not want any hurt feelings when your vague post is mistaken for a free request. It is YOUR responsibility to properly word your request.

To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Hi,

I've been given an old Motorola MX1000 (which seems to similar to the Saber 1) and have been trying it out. Receiving seems to go well but when you keep the PTT button depressed it beeps in a continuous tone as long as you keep the button depressed.

Does this indicate that there something wrong with it?

This model doesn't have an LCD screen and there aren't many buttons to try out.

I'm a newbie with radios so please be patient with me.

Thanks,

Martijn

Hello and welcome!

Sounds to me that it's been programmed for receive only on that particular channel. Does the red LED turn on while pressing the PTT? If not then there shouldn't be anything wrong with the radio and simply needs to be reprogrammed (with a computer and the appropriate software of course). Otherwise, it could have something to do with a secure module, or lack thereof, if the radio's secure capable.

The LED doesn't flash when you press PTT so it must be what you said. It does beep on all channels though (10 total).

Programming it is beyond my knowledge I guess so unless I find someone to do it for me it'll be little more than a scanner for me.

Thanks for the help though! :)

I have the same problem on a Saber III. It is a SECURENET and I have a DES module in it (but the channels were not using secure, and secure switch is in clear). I swapped with a DVP module and it still gives me the same result.

This unit was working before. Last thing I was trying to do was to swap out a 73A PA (146-174) with a low split PA (136-150.8) 21A, but that shouldn't have caused it. (and I swapped it back just to make sure anyway).

I also re-programmed it, with a newly created personality file, and also tried a very similar Saber II codeplug (I have 2 very similar units, and same split, same band). No change.

I wonder if I fried the main board? I can probably try to find a broken spare that has some other problems to build a working one. I know there is one (not mine) unit that has full on display and refused to be read or written by RSS (comm error). But since that is very likely a main board issue, I don't know any other analog parts could help? May be I should try the front shield just in case anyway.

Uh, yeah, so about that beep.......

If you hear a constant tone, it can mean one of several things:

  1. not in range of a repeater
  2. improperly programmed access tone or code
  3. no programmed transmit frequency

I vote for set to receive only. The quick beeps in secure mode would be lost keys- but since this is a solid "boop" tone in clear mode?.... Battery issue would be low battery chirp.

1. Saber would not do that.

2. Saber would not do that.

3. It might do that but not in my case.

If you are not familiar with Saber, then please don't just blindly guess something. It might not help your LMR professional status.

For my case, it was a VCO / synthesizer related problem, which I have solved.
