To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Does anyone know about a potable 800mhz trunking repeater. For instance a group of officers have an event out of range of our normal trunking system but still need to communicate other than using simplex channels, is there such a solution. Maybe something we can install in our mobile trailer unit. Basically a portable trunking system. If so please share how to build one out of an older 800 repeater or if anyone has model numbers off of one , or any for sale.

Thanks

Futurecomm manufactures transportable trunking network extension systems. These are not "trunking repeaters" per se but they do extend trunking system features and allow a user to set up an ad hoc coverage area outside of the systems normal coverage footprint.

This is the man portable version...

Here is a vehicle mounted version:

These products are not ready to use out of the box and will require extensive configuration by a knowledgeable person before you can use them.

If you are just looking to set up a coverage footprint independent of the trunking system then you could use a PDR3500 repeater from Motorola.

There is no such thing as "trunking repeater". There are a bunch of componets that make up a trunking system. What it sounds like is you need a repeater that you can repeat one set freq off of and have everyone working on that one freq. Very simple, look for a company that makes a 800mhz P25 repeater, get a good set of duplexors, some feed line and slap an antenna on the side of the trailer. Very simple, will give you pretty decent coverage for around your BOO.

You can pick up any small low power analog repeater and program it up, but the question is to what? You just can't program it to any old frequencies, including your own, especially if you are out of your licensed coverage area. Does your agency have the NPSPAC Mutual-Aid frequencies (8tac91, 92, 93 & 94)? Those can be utilized as long as there isn't a fixed repeater already on the frequency of choice.

I believe that the state of Mississippi has a mobile trunking site for the MSWIN system that they can set up in areas of temporary need or backup if a disaster takes down their normal site. I know that Louisiana has several for LWIN and even this one (Louisiana State Police Mobile Site Trunking System, Statewide, Louisiana - Scanner Frequencies) for their old analog system. Perhaps you could contact the communications agency that admins MSWIN to ask them about what they did (or fall back on the LWIN agency if your own state isn't helpful). What these mobile sites do is drive up, deploy the antennas and raise the towers (they're designed to raise quickly and with generally just a push of a button) and crank up the gear. Once operational, they're just an additional site on the normal multi-site trunking system so using them is pretty much seamless.

Motorola may not have a 'portable trunk system' but a company In BC does make a 'portable' repeater system. Daniels Electronics. They make a 5+1 (5voice+1control) stand alone trunk system. It is contained in multiple hard cases designed for rapid deployment and is avalible in V\U\800. take a look at Daniels Electronics - Products - Trunked Systems for more info.

The practical solution is to add a conventional repeater channel to the radio's profile and provide a portable conventional repeater system for use when deployed out of the range of the trunking system.

It can be done for less than the cost of a single XTS5000 if you don't have to have all Motorola equipment.

i agree with Elroy, i know a few agencies that do this very thing. for unit to unit comms it works great, but if you require trunking features when out of range then you need a full blown site on wheels which will be expensive.

Futurecomm DVRS Units

If you require connectivity to the trunked system, I would also recommend the units by Futurecomm. They are expensive but offer many configurations, flexible programming and most importantly-- EXCELLENT audio with little chopping. In Milwaukee County, WI we have over a dozen in service for linking 800 MHz and VHF for fire tactical operations and they have worked well. Good tech support from Futurecomm too.
