To obtain Motorola software see the Sticky in the Motorola forum.

The various other vendors often permit their dealers to sell the software online (i.e., Kenwood). Please use Google or some other search engine to find a dealer that sells the software. Typically each series or individual radio requires its own software package. Often the Kenwood software is less than $100 so don't be a cheapskate; just purchase it.

For M/A Com/Harris/GE, etc: there are two software packages that program all current and past radios. One package is for conventional programming and the other for trunked programming. The trunked package is in upwards of $2,500. The conventional package is more reasonable though is still several hundred dollars. The benefit is you do not need multiple versions for each radio (unlike Motorola).

Here are the ones I can think of offhand. You didn't mention if you needed SPECIFIC MDC features, or just ID Encode, so here are some starting points:

HT750 HT1250 HT1550
CP200
MTS2000

The HT1000 will do narrowband if the last 2 digits of the model number are DN. If they are anything other than that it won't do narrowband.

I work for a local TV Station, Our Studio and Broadcast Truck have motorola radios with narrowband frequencies and MDC-1200 PTT ID. I was looking into getting a handheld radio for myself and i needed to know which radios have narrowband as well as MDC-1200 Signaling.

Just Asking

I looked at all these radios and since the FD i am on uses MDC 1200 to identify I want to buy my own radio both portable and mobile. Now in our engines when someone keys up on a radio it shows there ID. I would like for both the portable and mobile I buy to do this. Is there any radios out there that do it??

Most all currently offered radios from Kenwood, Motorola, Vertex and Icom have MDC capability, it's a pretty common form of signaling.

I can't vouch for much other than what I have personally seen which is limited, but obviously to decode a mdc Id the radio has to have a display. I know that the motorola pr400, cm300, ht1250, cdm1250 and 1550 all can display it, as well as the kenwood tk x180 series with the most recent firmware (both mobile and portable). With all of these you have to enable it in programming.

We're having a problem here, because the Motorola MDC-1200 system has multiple functions (sending a user's ID on PTT is only one of them), so the phrase "doing MDC" isn't sufficiently defined.

If you want to be able to send a PTT-ID, all of the current XTS, XTL, HT1250/1500, CDM 1250/1500 radios will do that.

Decoding (and aliasing) radio MDC IDs was originally intended to be a console function. Later it was made available in some subscriber equipment, and is known as "PTT-ID" under the "Display" parameters. So far as I am aware, it is a firmware option upgrade in XTS/XTL equipment and not available in Waris equipment.

The Waris and commercial series WILL decode MDC ID's, however, you cannot assign aliases to them, they are just shown in the XXXX format.
